Tone Morphemes in Sinitic
Tone morphemes are used in the coding of a variety of grammatical functions in Sinitic languages: These include plural formation of personal pronouns, the diminutive forms of nouns, as well as different kinds of perfective and completive aspect marking, reported for dialects located in non-contiguous areas of China in the north and the south. With respect to verbal morphology, we first examine the different processes and stages of morphologizatio…
From oblique to core case in the Southern Min languages
This study sets out to discuss the evolution from oblique to core case as a manifestation of overtly-marked nominative-accusative alignment in Sinitic languages. This is due to the emergence of a type of ‘optional’ marking on preverbal direct objects in a construction type that has become widespread in Sinitic ( Chappell & Verstraete 2019 ). In particular, I examine spoken discourse data from Taiwanese Southern Min whose comitative preposition, k…
A semantic typology of location, existence, possession and copular verbs
This study is based on a sample of 116 languages from the Mainland East and Southeast Asian linguistic area. Its first objective is to examine four distinct synchronic patterns of areal polysemy, created by the semantic domains of copular, locative, existential and possessive verbs and the constructions they form. As a consequence, its second objective is to model the diachronic change underlying four language types identified on this basis from …
Comparatives of inequality in Southern Min
Our aim in this article is to evaluate Southern Min comparative constructions of inequality in terms of the evolution of different structural types from 15th to 21st centuries. The study is based on data observed in local operas and missionary texts, written mainly in Southern Min. An examination of the five extant versions of the Lì Jìng Jì 荔鏡記 and the Lì Zhī Jì 荔枝記, in addition to seven other local operas reveals that there have been three main…

Topicality and the typology of predicative possession
Recent accounts on the typology of predicative possession, including those by Stassen, recognise a Topic Possessive type with the possessee coded like the figure in an existential predication, and the possessor coded as a topic that is not subcategorised by the predicate and is not related to any syntactic position in the comment, literally: As for Possessor, there is Possessee. The Asian region is explicitly singled out as being a Topic Possessi…
Optional and alternating case marking
This paper presents a survey of the typology and diachrony of optional and alternating case marking, in the context of related phenomena such as referent- and construction-based splits. While there is much recent work in this area, driven by text-based approaches to language description, as well as quantitative and areal approaches to typology, the domain remains somewhat scattered, conceptually and terminologically. We chart the relevant phenome…

Modality and Mood in Sinitic
After defining auxiliary verbs as a grammatical category in Sinitic languages, this chapter sets out to analyze the notion of modality as expressed primarily by the Chinese modal verbs. Beginning with a brief sketch of their diachronic evolution, we proceed to treat this category in each of three major Sinitic languages, namely, Standard Mandarin, Hong Kong Cantonese, and Taiwanese Southern Min (Hokkien). It is shown that the main modal verbs pos…

The History of Chinese Grammars in Chinese and Western Scholarly Traditions
This article evaluates the scientific contribution of Western scholars and missionaries in the compilation of a large number of descriptive grammars for Chinese languages which appeared during the period from the late sixteenth to the early twentieth centuries. This is all the more interesting, given that the native tradition of grammatical studies only began to develop at a very late period in China’s history, the first real grammar being publis…
Ya33 ‘give’ as a valency increaser in Jinghpo nuclear serialization
This paper analyzes serial verb constructions in Jinghpo formed by ya33 ‘give’, arguing that it has the function of a valency–increasing device in nuclear serialization: The use of ya33 allows the licensing of an additional beneficiary argument as a core argument to the lexical verb. In a new twist, however, on the evolution of give verbs, we demonstrate that the benefactive usage is extended to malefactive semantics in a distinct, derived struct…

Variation in the grammaticalization of complementizers from verba dicendi in Sinitic languages
Exploring the semantic encoding of a group of crosslinguistically uncommon “spatial-coordinate demonstratives”, this work establishes the existence of demonstratives whose function is to project angular search domains, thus invoking proper coordinate systems (or “frames of reference”). What is special about these distinctions is that they rely on a spatial asymmetry in relativizing a demonstrative referent (representing the Figure) to the deictic…
Chinese linguistics and typology
1. Introduction China possesses rich linguistic resources which remain relatively untapped: the ten main Sinitic languages or dialect groups account for roughly 93% of the population (Mandarin, Jin, Xiang, Gan, Hui, Wu, Min, Kejia, Yue, and Pinghua); the remaining 7% comprise the many different “minority” languages in long term contact with Sinitic such as Tibeto-Burman, Mongolian, Hmong, and Tai. In an almost unprecedented state of affairs, writ…

Interpersonal Impressions, Gender Stereotypes, and Visual Speech
This study had two aims: (a) to establish whether interpersonal impressions made from visual speech followed the same patterns as those made from auditory speech; and (b) to determine the effect of gender stereotypes on interpersonal impressions made from visual speech. Forty-eight speechreaders (24 male and 24 female) saw 24 talkers (12 male and 12 female) on videotape without sound. After speechreading, speechreaders rated each talker on 14 sem…

Is the get‐passive adversative
A new analysis of the get‐passive is advocated in the following paper. It is based on the belief that the study of semantics is fundamental and prior to the study of syntax. This initial assumption leads to the postulation of a discrete number of intuitively‐verifiable interpretations of the get‐passive construction in the main section of the article. Natural language is used as the semantic metalanguage in the analysis of the passive. Bach inter…

Restrictions on the use of "double le" in chinese
Cet article met en évidence le fonctionnement de la construction en "double le" en chinois courant. (La forme "double le" est employée comme étiquette qui marque la co-occurrence du -le verbal-perfectif avec le prédicatif-inchoatif, ce qui produit une configuration syntactique de la forme : SN ... V-LE-SN-LE) . Les énoncés en "double le" expriment invariablement l'affirmation de l'accomplissement d'un événement attendu dans le contexte donné. Ils…

The Passive of Bodily Effect in Chinese
In standard Chinese (pŭtōnghuà), besides the regular passive form NP (undergoer) - BEI - NP (agent) - VP, there is a second syntactically related passive with a complex predicate containing a postverbal or 'retained object' : NP (undergoer) - BEI - NP (agent) - V - LE - N (part of the body). This second construction serves as the topic of discussion of this paper. It is shown to be restricted to expressing an inalienable relationship between a pe…

The semantics and pragmatics of associative DE in Mandarin discourse
Nous examinons dans cet article l'emploi du morphème "associatif" de en mandarin. Il s'agit de la première analyse de discours fondée sur un important corpus d'exemples écrits et parlés. Nous nous servons d'un modèle probabiliste pour démontrer que la présence ou l'absence de de dans les phrases nominales associatives est un phénomène complexe qui est déterminé par l'interaction de variables linguistiques telles que (i) le facteur pragmatique de …
