Tracing the influence of Western Mediterranean innovations in Neolithic Europe through directly radiocarbon-dated naked wheat (Triticum aestivum/durum/turgidum)
The dispersal of crops offers a powerful lens through which to investigate prehistoric mobility, interaction, and adaptation. This study examines the spatiotemporal distribution of naked wheat across Europe during the Neolithic using a dataset of 116 directly dated naked wheat remains from 58 archaeological sites (ca. 6000–2400 cal BCE). Dates were calibrated and analysed through summed probability distributions, composite Kernel Density Estimati…
New Data on the Beginning of the Neolithic in the Upper Rhône Valley
Almost 40 years after excavations at Place de la Planta, the project to build an underground warehouse for the cantonal archives in front of the former cantonal arsenal in Sion (Valais, Switzerland) provided an opportunity to gather new information about the Neolithic period in the upper Rhône valley. This article focuses on the first two stratigraphic complexes of the site, both of which yield important new insights into the earliest Neolithic s…
New evidence for prehistoric ploughing in Europe
For the past four decades, the ‘Secondary Products Revolution’ model, i.e., the exploitation of animal resources that do not involve killing the animal, such as the production of milk and wool and the use of animals for physical labour has been the object of heated discussion between Neolithic scholars. According to this model, the use of animal strength arrived relatively late in Europe—during the socio-economic changes of the Late Neolithic in …
An archaeobotanical and stable isotope approach to changing agricultural practices in the NW Mediterranean region around 4000 BC
It has recently been observed, that a change in the crop spectrum happened during the so-called Middle Neolithic in France at ca. 4000 BC. An agricultural system based on free-threshing cereals (naked wheat and naked barley) seems to shift to one based on glume wheats. This is a major change for traditional farmers and this paper aims to shed light on its possible causes. Here we describe the results of new investigations in a key area for the un…

Excavations carried out by INRAP at the Colmar site in 2008 revealed the presence of 75 circular pits identified as storage pits. No layers of waste suggesting possible nearby domestic activity were found. A total of 19 of the structures contained human remains among which there were 13 primary burial sites and 11 secondary burial sites. The ceramic items collected and a series of radiocarbon dates prove that the site dates back to the Late Neoli…
The realization of a diagnostic archaeology operation in the hamlet of Bagnoles (commune of Isle-sur-Sorgue, Vaucluse) during the summer of 2006 led to the discovery of a group of hollow structures attributable to the Middle Neolithic. Though this site is known only very partially, it already appears to be significant. Indeed, several of these closed groups of structures reveal not only an aspect of the Chassean poorly identified until now in the…

New Radiocarbon Dates for the Early Neolithic of the Western Mediterranean
Understanding of processes that determined the expansion of farming and animal husbandry in south-western Europe is hampered by poor chronologies of the early Neolithic in this region. This paper presents new radiocarbon dates, which are used to construct such a chronological frame for a regional group of the most important culture of the early Neolithic in the western Mediterranean: the Cardial culture
The pottery assemblage which is presented here is composed of 65 sherds found in the course of former excavations conducted by E. Genson in Grotte du Pont at Poussarou in the Montagne Noire geographical area. The main objective of this study has been to situate this ceramic assemblage in the Mediterranean Early Neolithic context. Nevertheless, the dual approach that has been chosen, which combines the determination of the origin of raw materials …

The uniformity and wide distribution of the Bell Beaker have given rise to a whole series of different — and sometimes contradictory — interpretative models. It is therefore necessary to classify all the documentation on the basis of a precise definition and to reconsider its place within the Late Neolithic. C14 dates at present available show that pottery styles are not always directly linked to chronology. The results of this research have led …
