    Gerald M Moser•ARTICLE•Hispania•1948

Portuguese literature has always included much noteworthy historical, polemic, or critical writing, aside from its better known masterpieces of lyric poetry or of fiction in the form of epics and novels. Suffice it to recall that both the imaginative and the reflective side were closely allied in the works of Portugal's greatest writers, Cam5es, Francisco Manuel de Melo, Antero do Quental, and E;a de Queiroz. In recent years reflective literature…

  • Recent Publications on Portuguese Language and Literature

    Gerald M Moser•ARTICLE•Hispania•1948

The lyric play continues to dominate the Portuguese stage. This is one of the reasons for the ever-renewed success of a playlet written by Jillio Dantas in 1902, A Ceia dos Cardeais, which was reprinted in 1947 for the thirty-eighth time. Gerald M Moser, Gerald Moser•ARTICLE•Hispania•1955

Ever changing, student slang covers so much ground, both in space and time, that its study requires much persistence.* But it is an entertaining study, for, apart from the curious forms of the words themselves, this vocabulary reflects and brings to mind a world of traditions past and present, the notorious praxes academicas of Coimbra in particular, to which Jorge Ferreira de Vasconcelos, distinguished alumnus of the Coimbra Law School in the si…
