Social support and psychological distress among young immigrants from the former Soviet Union in Israel
Latchkey children
Two studies examined factors facilitating the ability of latchkey children to care for themselves, and to function at a similar level to children who are under adult care. In the first study, 70 latchkey and 69 non-latchkey children were compared on measures of functioning, and on level of maternal perception of their children as independent. Children's level of functioning was not different across the latchkey condition. However, contrary to exp…
Intimate relationships among adolescent romantic partners and same-sex friends
Based on a comprehensive understanding of intimacy, and emerging from a systems theory, this chapter examines adolescent intimacy in close friendships and romantic relationships. Males and females deal differently with the balancing of closeness and individuality in the two types of close friendships. In addition, development of an intimate romantic relationship requires greater commitment for males than for females
Adolescent Intimacy
This study examined and compared perceptions of intimacy in friendships among Israeli Jewish and Israeli Bedouin adolescents. Questionnaires assessing perceived intimacy and self-disclosure in close friendships were completed by 288 Jewish and 327 Bedouin 7th-, 9th-, and 11th-grade students. Overall, results showed that intimacy was perceived to reflect a balance between closeness and individuality in close friendships. Yet Jewish and Bedouin ado…

Psychological aspects of male infertility
The aim of this research was to study the effect of suspected infertility on psychological functioning, comparing men who suspect that they are infertile ( N = 107) with men who have no such suspicion ( N = 30). Infertile men had lower self‐esteem, higher anxiety and showed more somatic symptoms than fertile men. The effects of moderating variables on the psychological functioning of the subfertile men were analysed. The findings were that causal…

Does Political Socialization in Adolescence Have a Lasting Influence? The Enduring Effect of Israeli Youth Movements on the Political Ideology and Behavior of Their Graduates
The long-term effects of membership in Israeli youth movements on the political socialization of their adolescent members, and their subsequent political ideology and involvement after leaving the movements were studied on a representative sample (N = 1250) of Israeli University students. This research's main contribution to political socialization studies is that it offers a means by which to analyze a socialization effect directed solely at the…
Dogmatism, Ideology, and Right-Wing Radical Activity
The relationship between dogmatism, authoritarian attitudes, and right-wing radical activity was measured in a radical group, Gush Emunim (N = 34), and in a group of nonactivists (N = 32). The two groups matched on variables known to be correlated with dogmatism (sex, age, religious observance, level of education). The findings were that although dogmatism (Rokeach's D scale) was related to authoritarian attitudes (anti-Arab rights, pro-censorshi…
