Open Access•D Valenzuela, Indira Montt et al.•ARTICLE•Arts•2025

80 years of Chilean rock art research, from its early descriptive stages in the 1940s to the present-day integration of relational ontologies, archaeometric techniques, and interdisciplinary perspectives, is reviewed. 562 publications are analysed, covering four major regions: the Arid North, Semi-Arid North, South-Central, and Southernmost Chile. Drawing from a systematically constructed corpus, we trace the evolution of research questions, theo…

    Open Access•Persis B Clarkson•ARTICLE•Chungara•2019

An examination of the historic caravans of northern Canada in the 20 th c reveals compelling historical, technological, economic, social, political, and kinship comparisons to the developments of caravans in northern Chile in the 20 th c.

  • New Chronometric Dates for the Puquios of Nasca, Peru

    Open Access•Persis B Clarkson, Ronald I Dorn•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•1995•Cited by: 4•References: 28

Numeric age assessments of organic material encapsulated by rock varnish present on stone lintels of two "puquios" in the Nasca region of the south coast of Peru indicate a Precolumbian age. Accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon analyses at the Isotrace Laboratory revealed ages of cal A. D. 560(620)650 and cal A. D. 600(640)660 (1 sigma). These calibrated measurements are considered to be appropriate in the context of the archaeological settl…

  • New Approach to the Radiocarbon Dating of Rock Varnish, with Examples from Drylands

Ronald I Dorn, Persis B Clarkson et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1992•Cited by: 21•References: 31

New electron microscope observations reveal that organic inclusions are often trapped in pockets under rock varnish. Accelerator radiocarbon dating of subvarnish organic detritus provides a new method of constraining when a rock was exposed by cultural or geomorphic processes. Applications are exemplified for human artifacts and landforms found in drylands. Three radiocarbon dates from 30,000 to 36,000 yr B.P. indicate rock engravings in South Au…
