Migrant identity, belonging and street comfort in Johannesburg, South Africa
“Missing Masculinities”
This paper discusses the effects of migration-induced male absence on the upbringing of children in selected communities of Zimbabwe. We argue that migration scholarship places more emphasis on the economic benefits of migration such as remittances and imported innovation, but is largely silent on the emotional hardships it causes for the family, especially the children who are left behind. We locate this work in the context of Zimbabwe where men…
No Hope for the 'Foreigners
In South Africa there is a conflation between refugees and other migrants at a legislative, policy and narrative level. Based on 32 interviews and four focus groups conducted in Johannesburg and Musina in spring 2020, we show the conflation between refugees and migrants through changing legislation, a bureaucratized system which makes access to any legal status difficult and political narratives that serve to construct a threat. This results in d…
Who is watching? Refugee protection during a pandemic - responses from Uganda and South Africa
Both Uganda and South Africa were quick to respond to the global pandemic - Uganda for example imposing quarantine on foreign travellers after only a handful of cases before shutting off all international flights, and South Africa imposing one of the first lockdowns on the continent. Reflecting on the first 6 months of the pandemic responses in terms of refugee protection, the two countries have taken diverging pathways. South Africa used the pan…
The Corona Virus and Migration Governance in South Africa
The South African response in dealing with the Corona pandemic needs to speak to the realities of all people living in the country, including migrant and refugee communities. Reflecting on this in light of ongoing research on the political stakes of migration governance, we find that the virus response shows little change in the government agenda when it comes to dealing with refugees and other migrants. Veritably, we see that the pandemic may ev…
Visual representations in South Africa of China and the Chinese people
Visual images are significant in framing and shaping representations of China and Chinese people within Africa. At times, visual imagery adds subtlety and complexity to the differentiated and fluid nature of the Africa–China relationship but at other times it simplifies and reinforces stereotypes. This study of imaging from South Africa reveals the layering and ambivalence of colonial and postcolonial representation. The study supports a literatu…
(Un)Rest in Peace
This chapter explores the relationship between mobilitymobility , belongingbelonging and places of burial. The focus is on foreign migrants migration who die in Johannesburg and are buried on foreign land, away from their hometowns and countries of origin. Questions about where in the City of Johannesburg foreign migrants are buried and how decisions around burial placeplace are made are of interest. These questions are informed by historical pat…
Ethnic Enclave of a Special Sort?' Mozambicans in La Rochelle, Johannesburg
Although Mozambican migration to South Africa has a long history, it is only recently that scholarly literature has begun to shift slightly from the defining albatross of the contract labour migration system to provide a much more incisive analysis of the everyday circumstances of individual migrants. Focusing on the suburb of La Rochelle in Johannesburg, we argue that, while this shift represents an important insight for migration research, it r…
Strategy and Tactics
Migration studies in South Africa have partially taken the spatial turn, giving some attention to questions of territoriality and spatial relationships. Recent literature has drawn on de Certeau's distinction between the strategies of the powerful and the tactics of the subordinate, revealing for example how migrants occupy hidden spaces to evade control and social hostility. Within the broad aegis of de Certeau's work, we engage the historical a…
South African HIV/Aids programming overlooks migration, urban livelihoods, and informal workplaces
South Africa has the largest population of people living with HIV globally and is associated with high population mobility. The majority of migrants move in search of improved livelihood opportunities, and many who migrate (both internally and across borders) move into urban areas, often through peripheral informal settlements where HIV prevalence is shown to be double that of urban formal areas. While the relationship between migration and the s…
