Class in the Classroom. A Cohort Study of Leader Role Occupancy Across the Life Course
Early life experiences are important precursors for developing leadership skills and acquiring formal leader roles later in life. The antecedents of leadership emergence in childhood have, however, not been subject to much empirical research—nor their links to actual leader role occupancy in adulthood. This study examines leadership emergence in a life-course perspective based on a large cohort of boys and girls, including survey and register dat…
We (All) Want You? Perceived Military Leadership Potential and Actual Leadership Role Occupancy in Working Life
One of the main tasks of the armed forces is to recruit and select future soldiers and to identify potential officers. However, these procedures may have a wider societal impact beyond the borders of the military organization itself. This study aims to examine how compatible assessments of military leadership potential are with those in the labor market. Using longitudinal data concerning a large cohort of Swedish males who underwent mustering du…
Subgroups of tenants at risk of eviction due to rent arrears in five Dutch cities
This study identifies subgroups of tenants in a sample of 495 tenants at risk of eviction, due to rent arrears, by 16 housing associations in five Dutch municipalities, and examines the attuning of services to the needs of the tenants in these subgroups. Latent class analysis with eight known risk factors for eviction identified five subgroups of tenants, which can be characterised as young immigrants, native Dutch tenants with little support, hi…
Born in 1953
At the beginning of the 1960s, Swedish researchers started a sociological study of all children born in Stockholm in 1953, Project Metropolitan. This book describes the project’s at times dramatic history, where issues of personal integrity and the role of social sciences were heavily debated. These discussions were fueled by the rapid and far-reaching digitalization in society at large and also within social sciences. As such, Project Metropolit…
Evictions and suicide
BACKGROUND: Millions of families across the world are evicted every year. However, very little is known about the impact that eviction has on their lives. This lack of knowledge is also starting to be noticed within the suicidological literature, and prominent scholars are arguing that there is an urgent need to explore the extent to which suicides may be considered a plausible consequence of being faced with eviction. METHOD: The present study's…
Social capital, human capital and parent–child relation quality
We analyse the utility of social capital for children’s achievement, and if this utility interacts with family human capital and the quality of the parent-child relationship. Our focus is on parental activities directly related to children’s school work. Our data stem from a Swedish cohort born in 1953 and consist of both survey and register data. We find that parents with more human capital tended to offer their children more social capital. OLS…

Arbetslöshet som en icke önskvärd konsekvens av socialbidrag
Unemployment as an unintended consequence of social assistance recipiency: results from a time-series analysis of aggregated population dataDoes the frequency of unemployment have a tendency to increase the number of social assistance recipients, or does the relationship work the other way around? This article utilizes Swedish annual data on aggregated unemployment and means-tested social assistance recipiency in the period 1946–1990 and proposes…

Does Social Assistance Recipiency Influence Unemployment
Has the frequency of unemployment a tendency to increase the number of social assistance recipients, or does the relationship work the other way round? This article utilizes Swedish monthly data on aggregated open unemployment and means-tested social assistance recipiency in the period 1991-2004 and proposes a multiple time-series approach based on vector error-correction modelling in order to distinguish between theories about the direction of i…
Inheritance of Welfare Recipiency
Intergenerational transmission of welfare dependency has received increasing attention among social scientists, especially in the United States, as greater availability of longitudinal data has shed new light on this issue. It remains unclear, however, to what extent the intergenerational correlation of welfare recipiency observed in the United States reflects or interacts with unobserved variables, the racial composition of the population, and t…
A Combined Macro- and Micro-level Analysis of the Relationship between Unemployment and Means-Tested Social Assistance in Sweden
In an era of mass unemployment, the economic consequences of unemployment for the unemployed are of central relevance for the analysis of inequality and social stratification. This paper analyses the individual-level economic consequences of unemployment and poverty in Sweden, concentrating on economic hardship and poverty measured in terms of recipiency of means-tested social assistance. By use of aggregate time-series analysis of the period bet…
The Precariously Housed and the Risk of Homelessness
This study is intended as a contribution to the ongoing US and European debate on housing inequality and homelessness. We do this by focusing on the problems faced by the 'precariously housed', or people repeatedly threatened with eviction, in the advanced welfare state of Sweden. Our empirical analysis is based on a sample of individuals repeatedly threatened with eviction in Sweden in the period 1982-86. Using proportional hazard regressions, w…
Evictions in the Welfare State - an Unintended Consequence of the Swedish Policy
Despite a remarkable improvement in the general welfare of the Swedish population since the 1960s, the rate of housing evictions has rapidly increased in the same period This paper presents an analysis of factors associated with the growth in the eviction rate The main hypothesis models eviction rate growth as the unintended effect of Swedish housing policy, otherwise viewed as highly successful We also speculate about the relationship between ho…
