  • An Introduction to the Stone Age Archaeology of the Polihali Dam Area, Mokhotlong District, Lesotho

Tim Forssman, Matt G Lotter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 15

Much of Lesotho’s cultural heritage has been studied as a result of dam developments. Where dams have been built, heritage studies have provided crucial data for improving our understanding of local archaeological sequences. Ahead of the construction of the Lesotho Highland Development Authority’s ( LHDA ) new Polihali Dam in Lesotho’s Mokhotlong District and following the recommendations of a heritage assessment ( CES 2014), a large-scale five-y…

  • Removal of Rock Art Affected by the Raising of the Clanwilliam Dam Wall, Western Cape Province, South Africa: Techniques and Procedures

Jeremy C Hollmann, Frans Prinsloo et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation and Management of…•2017

The commissioning by South Africa’s Department of Water and Sanitation of a new and higher wall for the Clanwilliam Dam will increase dam storage and provide additional water for emerging and existing commercial farmers. But there is a cost to South African heritage. The raising of the wall will flood 27 rock art sites as well as other archaeological and historical resources. In partial mitigation of this impact on heritage the removal of particu…

    Jeremy C Hollmann•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 14

Rock paintings of bees and bees' nests, localised motifs in southern African hunter-gatherer (Bushman) art of the northern uKhahlamba-Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa are analysed and discussed. While the subject matter is restricted to a small geographical area, the ways in which it expresses beliefs about the power of bees are of much wider interest. The painters depicted two kinds of comb (honey and brood), both nutritionally rich subs…

  • Geometric' Motifs in Khoe-San Rock Art: Depictions of Designs, Decorations and Ornaments in the Gestoptefontein-Driekuil Complex, South Africa

    Jeremy C Hollmann•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2014•Cited by: 9

‘Geometric’ motifs in rock art — so-called because they superficially resemble certain mathematical shapes — are globally widespread and likely have different meanings. Southern African researchers have described these motifs variously as ‘abstract’, ‘non-representational’, or ‘entoptic phenomena’. Research at the Gestoptefontein-Driekuil Complex (GDC), a cluster of rock art sites in South Africa’s North West Province, suggests, however, that cer…

  • Rain snakes’ from the Senqu River: New light on Qing's commentary on San rock art from Sehonghong, Lesotho

Challi, Sam Challis et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2013•Cited by: 13•References: 11

Previously unpublished rock art in Lesotho, southern Africa, is believed to explain the words of Qing — the San (Bushman) man who gave interpretations of paintings in the vicinity. Published in 1874, his testimony, when closely read and compared with other sources, has since become the single most important source for the decipherment of rock art in the sub-continent. One seemingly incomprehensible phrase, though, concerning the famous rain-makin…

Jeremy C Hollmann, Jeremy Hollmann•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2011•Cited by: 1

Addresses rock engravings on the wonderstone hills just outside Ottosdal, South Africa. Much of the rock art has been destroyed due to mining activities, with very few records and the largest remaining outcrop is still threatened. The study hopes to bring this situation to the attention of the public and the heritage authorities

The paintings at Long March Shelter in the Klein Swartberg, Western Cape Province, are 'big'in two senses.
