‘I go in… I teach and I go home. I may as well be any other person. It would not make any difference’
Most academic staff in Australia are employed casually and on teaching-focused contracts, with little opportunity for research or advancement. This paper presents findings from a project undertaken at an Australian university and its pathway institution investigating casual academics’ experiences as peripheral members of the academy. Survey data from 59 casual academics and 13 follow-up interviews revealed several themes, including experiences of…
Whose concerns? Young adults discussing (their) concerns with pornography
Concerns regarding pornography have always existed, and perhaps this is nowhere more pronounced than in the contexts of young people’s viewing. Pornography is often framed in binary ways (sexual revelation versus moral turpitude), often by people who do not specialise in pornography, and young people’s experiences are often neglected. Against this backdrop, this article engages with interview and focus group data that sought to explore young adul…
From Exceptionality to Mundanity
Pornography scholarship is often dominated by discourses surrounding its alleged risks to viewers. Approaching sex and porn through the lens of 'play' rather than 'drama', this article concentrates on the everyday particularity of porn viewing, where media-related practices/technologies afford possibilities between porn users and digital objects. Drawing upon focus groups/interviews with 17 young adult porn viewers (18-25 years) based in western …

‘Teaching up’ at school and home
This paper explores young people’s understandings of gender and investigates their gender-based experiences in high schools in Australia. The discussion is based on qualitative research including focus groups and interviews with 47 recent high school leavers from diverse linguistic, socioeconomic, religious, ethnic, gender and sexuality backgrounds, who attended a broad range of high school types in New South Wales (NSW). We found that young peop…
Gender and schooling in Australia
This special issue presents a collection of recent papers drawing on qualitative research in and about schooling in Australia and the ways in which gender-related issues in the broadest sense continue to shape people’s educational experiences. These papers from the present are positioned in relation to the long histories of policy and research attention to gender equity in Australian education. We set the context for work in the present by scanni…

Eating out or dining in
The Middle Period of the Atacama oases, North Chile, has been characterized as a time of peace, uniform abundance, and widespread access to exotic materials. In the present work, we test this notion through a comparison of Middle Period human isotopic data (δ13Cco, δ15Nco, and δ13Cap) representing two distinct ayllus, Solcor and Tchecar, in the San Pedro de Atacama oases. We employ Bayesian mixture modeling of individual-level isotopic data to qu…
Modeling Breastfeeding and Weaning Practices (BWP) on the Coast of Northern Chile's Atacama Desert During the Formative Period
Stable isotope analysis of bone collagen is frequently employed as a means of studying the breastfeeding and weaning practices (BWP) of archaeological populations. Such studies are strengthened greatly through the application of statistical models that permit precise and model-bound estimates of weaning age, duration, trophic enrichment, and the isotopic characterization of supplementary foods. Here we present the result of a stable isotope (δ15N…
Hand-held Raman spectroscopy as a pre-screening tool for archaeological bone
Technical note
Objective : Development of a model for the prediction of δ 13 C protein from δ 13 C collagen and Δ 13 C ap‐co . Model‐generated values could, in turn, serve as “consumer” inputs for multisource mixture modeling of paleodiet. Methods : Linear regression analysis of previously published controlled diet data facilitated the development of a mathematical model for predicting δ 13 C protein (and an experimentally generated error term) from isotopic da…
