Wokół wybranych wątków filozofii moralnej Josepha Raza. Część I
One of the most eminent contemporary legal philosophers, Joseph Raz, made significant contributions not only to the aforementioned discipline, but also to political philosophy and moral philosophy, the three branches which, in his view, contribute to practical philosophy. J. Raz’s achievements in the latter two areas are less familiar to the Polish reader than his concepts in the field of jurisprudence, all the more so because none of his works, …
Harmonia i dysonans
HARMONY AND DISSONANCE: CONVERSATIONS WITH OXFORD PHILOSOPHERS This collection consists of six essays that I wrote between 2019 and 2022, and memories of two scholars to whom I owe a great deal. The idea for the book occurred to me after the outbreak of the war between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022. Several months before the invasion of Ukraine I had read John Gray’s Feline Philosophy: Cats and the Meaning of Life (2020). Though this work –…
John Gray’s Tree-Part Philosophical Creed
John Gray’s three controversial, widely discussed books, Straw Dogs: Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals (2002), The Silence of Animals: On Progress and Other Myths (2013) and The Soul of the Marionette: A Short Inquiry into Human Freedom (2015), create a natural trilogy. They all have a similar structure, consisting of a kaleidoscope of ideas, digressions, associations and recurring motifs. This article provides a brief analysis and a thorough …
Harmonia i dysonans. Wizje życia etycznego Isaiaha Berlina i Leszka Kołakowskiego
Pluralism and Religion Again
The article constitutes a continuation of the discussion between Henry Hardy and myself, which was initiated in AFPiFS in 2019 as a result of my publishing a review of Hardy’s book: In Search of Isaiah Berlin: A Literary Adventure (2018). In the present commentary I address again the nub of our disagreement, that is the relationship between Berlin’s pluralism and universalist religions, like Christianity and Islam. According to Hardy pluralism un…
Diversity and Decency
George Crowder’s article makes an interesting contribution to the literature on value pluralism. Yet, as a commentary onmy essay (Polanowska-Sygulska, 2019c) it is entirely misconceived. Crowder’s reading of my text is inadequate, in terms of both the legal and the philosophical aspects of my argument. Having ascribed to me the belief that pluralism always favors cultural diversity against legal uniformity (a belief which I do not hold), he argue…
The Crucifix Dispute and Value Pluralism
This article seeks to interpret the striking divergence between the two judgments passed by the European Court of Human Rights in the Lautsi v Italy case in terms of value pluralism. The latter is a hotly debated position in ethics, brought to life in the second half of the twentieth century by Isaiah Berlin. Pluralism elucidates these in interesting ways. First, value pluralism sheds light on three major aspects of the trial before the European …
