Brewing the Global Shift
Asia has become the world’s largest beer-consuming region, and Southeast Asia sees the strongest growth in demand. While the Asian beer industry attracts investments from global and regional capital and is undergoing significant restructuring, there has been little academic attention to these transformations. In this article, the focus is on Vietnam, Myanmar, and Thailand to analyse how global and regional lead firms adapt to changing competition…

Transfer of ‘Western’ Institutions to a Transition Economy Context
The article addresses possibilities and challenges in the transfer of ‘western’ institutions to a transition economy context. It examines how the transition economy context and attention to context can explain the outcome of a health, safety and environment (HSE) project that was implemented in the petroleum sector in Vietnam 1997–2011. Industrial development in buyer-driven networks
The garment industry in Vietnam has been included in global buyer-driven networks since the 1990 s. Industrial upgrading takes place, but the changes are generally small and incremental. Profit margins tend to decline and backward linkages in the home country are few. The garment industry in Sri Lanka was included in buyer-driven networks already in the 1980 s and shares this experience. The objective is to explain what processes and mechanisms t…

The article addresses possibilities and barriers to economic activity and development in the Oshana region of Northern Namibia. The focus is on the role of local embeddedness of economic activities in attaining economic development. A network perspective, based on theories of value chains that are embedded both in social relations and spatially, is selected as the analytical framework. The value chains of local black entrepreneurs in the study ar…
Globalisation and the garment industry in Sri Lanka
The objective of this article is to explain how globalisation, the phase-out of MFA and regionalisation affect the development of the garment industry in Sri Lanka. The article starts with a discussion of the key concepts of globalisation and regionalisation, followed by a presentation of the analytical framework, including a theoretical discussion of winners and losers in commodity networks. It is argued that regionalisation may exacerbate the p…
Environmental practice in the commodity chain
The combined restructuring–commodity chain approach is applied to shed light on processes that explain changes in the spatial and functional division of labour in the dyestuff and tanning industries. Both industries are pollution-intensive and are experiencing a locational shift from the north to the south and increasingly widespread sourcing. A distinction is made between producer-driven and buyer-driven commodity chains. This helps to highlight…
