Border trade zones around China: Internalising which rules
Border trade at the turn of the XX–XXI centuries became a prominent factor in the development of China's border regions. To use geographical advantage, the Chinese authorities established a special institution (the "open border belt"), which allowed them to build trade channels that extend far beyond China's borders. The neighboring countries (from North Korea to Vietnam) have had to respond to Chinese initiatives. Some of them have even created …

Cows, Moonshine, Pheasants … versus Soybeans: The Birth of a Capitalist Plantation in the Amur Village
Drawing on decades of participant observation, followed by ethnographic research in Novoalexeevka (the Russian Far East), this article reveals why and how a polyphonic assemblages’ economy (economic relations different from both socialist and capitalist) was substituted by plantation capitalism. The story is that polyphonic assemblage involved almost all the villagers, while in plantation capitalism, almost all of them fell by the wayside. The ar…
Post-Soviet agrarian transformations in the Russian Far East. Does China matter
Since the mid-2000s, the Russian Far East (RFE) has seen a revival of agriculture accompanied by rapid agrarian transformation that has taken a unique form because of the area’s proximity to China. However, the existing literature either does not recognize Chinese presence or only studies it in terms of capitalist relationships transplanted directly from China and isolated from local realities. This paper seeks to remedy this oversight by explori…

Time and Space in Tourism Studies
Two categories — geographical space and social time — allows for the description of any kind of tourist travels. However, although the category of space is usually explicitly present in tourism studies, social time often remains implicit. The authors start their text with the idea that the astronomical concept of time used in economic and geographical studies of tourism cannot explain the complexity of the mobile world. The concept of social time…
The Economy of Qualities in a Cross-Border Market: Shopping Tourism as a Performative Practice
The article discusses the performativity of shopping tourism on the Russian-Chinese border using the terminology of M. Callon’s and his co-authors’ economy of qualities. The 2014 crisis has changed the parity of the ruble and the yuan, and has also changed the vector of cross-border tourism in the opposite direction. The authors show how observation of the residents of Blagoveshchensk regarding the purchases of Chinese tourists performs the perce…

Gold, the State and Market Actors: Legal vs. Illegal Practices of Interaction
This article focuses on an examination of the role of the state in the development of the informal economy. Using material from unstructured interviews, the authors analyse reasons for choosing illegal strategies to overcome formal barriers to entry into the gold- mining sector. They conclude that it is not so much the height of administrative barriers as the configuration of power relations which develops when the state treats some businesses fa…
The Case of the Amur as a Cross-Border Zone of Illegality
China, Russia and Mongolia share thousands of miles of border, but their traditions, languages and worldviews are remarkably different. Presenting varied perspectives on how the borders between these unique countries are enacted, produced and crossed, this book illuminates global uncertainties: China’s search for energy resources and the employment of its huge population, Russia’s fear of Chinese migration, and the precarious economic independenc…
Trans-border Exchange between Russia and China: The Case of Blagoveshchensk and Heihe
Two Russian-trained geographers investigate the multiple and largely informal and illicit forms of exchange between two provincial cities of roughly similar size located on opposite banks of the Amur River, namely Blagoveshchensk, in Russia's Far East, and Heihe, in neighboring northeast China. The study is based on interviews and field observations from 2002 to 2009 in Blagoveshchensk, as well as official statistics from the relevant Russian and…
Informal Economy of Translocations. The Case of the Twin City of Blagoveshensk-Heihe
The article evaluates economic interactions between people in the adjacent border cities of Blagoveshensk (Russia) and Heihe (China). The article reveals the conflict between the development of translocality around the border of the two countries and recent Russian policy to strengthen the position of the nation-state
