“A mother is a mother, and a father is a father.” (Anti-)gender at play in the 2024 Romanian elections
We examine in this article how anti-gender discourses affected Romania's 2024 mega-electoral year, contributing to an ongoing democratic backsliding. Based on electoral programs and an in-depth case study of the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians, we explore the official platforms of parliamentary parties and the performative rhetoric of candidate-launch events. We operationalize anti-gender politics through five theoretically defined …
The landscape of political science journals in Romania
Romanian Political Science was institutionalized mostly after the fall of the communist regime. While the number of Political Science departments has declined after the 2000s, the number of journals continued to increase. We investigate this unusual pattern, focusing on the journals’ relationship with their home universities and editorial teams, and on their reaction to the opening of Romanian Political Science to the outside world. In a context …
Entangled Trajectories
Analysis of the Romanian and Bulgarian Elections. in both countries, the 2024 electoral configurations display reversed yet structurally analogous features. On the eve of the 2024 elections, Romania maintained a relatively institutionalized party system, albeit with the growing influence of far-right actors such as the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), alongside a constellation of smaller yet vocal parties and leaders who mobilized platf…
No populism’s land? Religion and gender in Romanian politics
While populism is one of the most analysed aspects of contemporary politics, we know little about its interaction with religion and about motivations leading political parties to oppose or support a secular appropriation of religious themes and symbols beyond any spiritual or doctrinal dimension. This paper aims to disentangle the intersection of religion and populism in Romania with regard to the concept of family, by exploring how parliamentari…
Saved by the diaspora? The case of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians
This article analyses and explains the rapid electoral success of an emergent populist radical right party in Romania—the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR). AUR’s definition of ‘a transnational people’ relates to a multi-layered community—native Romanians within Romania, co-ethnic communities in neighbouring countries, and Romanians living and working abroad—that create, together, a Romanianness in need of representation, and preservation…
Preaching the “Traditional Family” in the Romanian Parliament
In this article, we examine a decade of parliamentary debates related to the topic of family to understand the reasons and the rhetorical strategies that drive the support of Romanian MPs for the traditional family. Starting from four themes identified in the literature as relevant for the topic of family—national identity, religion, heteronormativity, and children—we identify the dominant definition of the “traditional family” as that of the Chr…

Covid-19 and orientations towards solidarity
Solidarity is core to Europe's societal organisation and was intensively addressed in recent research. Using data collected before and during the lockdown in spring 2020, we examine whether value orientations towards solidarity changed in three countries (Spain, Hungary, and Romania). Before the pandemic, people in Spain expressed higher solidarity than people in Hungary and Romania. Our argument claims that when facing uncertainty, people react …
Roșia Montană, the revolution of our generation
We analyse Roșia Montană environmental activism as a critical case that brings together an unusual combination of high levels of transactional activism and high levels of mass protests. We build on the assumptions of civil society in post-communist Europe and the literature on environmental mobilization to investigate the ways in which environmental-based activism developed before and after Romania’s accession to the European Union (EU). Starting…

Phoenix Populism
This paper is the first exploratory analysis of the ideological features of extra-parliamentary radical-right populist parties in Romania, which, despite lacking parliamentary power, confirm the latent fertility of Romanian politics for populism. Using qualitative content analysis of programs and statutes, we identify a decreased relevance of ethnicity-based mobilization and an increased emphasis on cultural, religious, and/or gender-based criter…
Migrating trust
This paper considers the case of the international migrants’ confidence in political institutions, from a social embeddedness perspective on political trust. We use country-level aggregates of confidence in institutions as indicators of specific cultures of trust, and by employing data from the European Values Study, we test two competing hypotheses. First, as confidence in institutions depends on the values formed during early childhood, the int…
Learning democracy and market economy in post-communist Romania
Correlation Versus Interchangeability
This article shows that highly correlated measures can produce different results. We identify a democratization model from the literature and test it in more than 120 countries from 1951 to 1992. Then, we check whether the results are robust regarding measures of democracy, time periods, and levels of development. The findings show that measures do matter: Whereas some of the findings are robust, most of them are not. This explains, in part, why …
