Meeting the machines half-way
This article reports a small-scale experiment comparing human and Large Language Model (LLM) performance on a difficult qualitative coding task: assigning values to short text snippets. When annotators compared human and model outputs, they consistently preferred the human annotations. However, agreement among human coders was low. To explain this contradiction, we conducted follow-up interviews inspired by Cicourel’s work. The interviews reveale…
Blended Sensory Walks
Anthropology curricula often neglect quantitative and computational methods, leaving students underprepared for data-rich research. Yet ethnographic practices such as sensory walks naturally generate digital materials suited for computational analysis. We developed a blended intervention that combines sensory walks with image clustering, introducing data science while preserving anthropology’s experiential and interpretive focus. Participants use…
Računalniška analiza slovenskih zgodovinskih časopisov (1771–1914)
This paper presents a computational linguistic analysis of sPeriodika, a historical corpus of Slovenian periodicals published between 1771 and 1914. Using keyword analysis and diachronic analysis, we explore the linguistic, thematic, and historical dimensions of ten prominent newspapers in the corpus. Our findings reveal the centrality of these newspapers in shaping Slovenian nation-building during the post-1848 period, while also highlighting th…
Ethnography beyond thick data
This article presents opportunities for enriching anthropological knowledge and methods with machine learning and data analysis. Different examples show how quantitative methods empower anthropologists and how computational methods supplement ethnography, from sensor data and interview transcripts to designing technology solutions and automatically labeling cultural heritage. Conversely, the authors discuss the benefits of qualitative approaches …
Data Mining Workspace Sensors
While social sciences and humanities are increasingly including computational methods in their research, anthropology seems to be lagging behind. But it does not have to be so. Anthropology is able to merge quantitative and qualitative methods successfully, especially when traversing between the two. In the following contribution, we propose a new methodological approach and describe how to engage quantitative methods and data analysis to support…
Zbornik konference Jezikovne tehnologije in digitalna humanistika
With this year's conference we are celebrating the 20th anniversary since the first conference »Language technologies« which took place in 1998 in Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana and was organized by Tomaž Erjavec, Vojko Gorjanc, Jerneja Žganec Gros and Anica Rant. The topics of the first conference were the development and application of language technologies for Slovene and directions for the future. 26 papers were presented, dealing with speech techn…
