  • Catch ‘em When the Water is Low

    Open Access•Wesa Perttola, Maarit Kallio•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2024•References: 17

Fishing and wetlands have in many cases been essential facets of life but are often overlooked in archaeological and historical research. In this article, we focus on the floodplains of the Palembang and Jambi region of Sumatra, where both of these aspects are comprehensively entwined. The floodplain fisheries there are highly productive, and function in a rhythm with the hydrological cycle of the rivers. By combining the pre-existing archaeologi…

  • World's human migration patterns in 2000-2019 unveiled by high-resolution data

    Open Access•Venla Niva, Alexander Horton et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 56

Despite being a topical issue in public debate and on the political agenda for many countries, a global-scale, high-resolution quantification of migration and its major drivers for the recent decades remained missing. We created a global dataset of annual net migration between 2000 and 2019 (~10 km grid, covering the areas of 216 countries or sovereign states), based on reported and downscaled subnational birth (2,555 administrative units) and de…

  • EU Forest reference levels

Open Access•R Päivinen, Maarit Kallio et al.•ARTICLE•Forest Policy and Economics•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 1

This study assesses harvest levels compatible with the reference levels for forest management sinks (FRLs) within the EU, the UK, and Norway (EU + UK + N). A detailed examination of the harvest data and the National Forest Accounting Plans of the countries within this region reveals that the countries have calculated their FRLs based on different modelling approaches and that the quality of data used has not always been sound. The process of prep…

  • Global migration is driven by the complex interplay between environmental and social factors

Open Access•Venla Niva, Maarit Kallio et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Migration manifests an important response and adaptation measure to changes in the environment and socioeconomic conditions. In a time when environmental stressors and risks are unprecedentedly increasing, understanding the interplay between the underlying factors driving migration is of high importance. While the relationships between environmental and socioeconomic drivers have been identified conceptually, the comprehensive global-scale spatia…

  • Wood-based textile fibre market as part of the global forest-based bioeconomy

    Open Access•Maarit Kallio, A Maarit I Kallio•ARTICLE•Forest Policy and Economics•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Wood-based cellulose fibres for textiles, hygiene and health products have been in the market for long time, but competition with other materials has kept their market share modest. The shortage of land for the expansion of cotton production, environmental concerns related to cotton and the oil-based textile materials, changes in fashion, and new technologies for extracting fibres from wood are changing the market setting in the favour of wood-ba…
