Los incendios de 2019-2020 en Australia
This text provides an outline of the political, historical and environmental background to the 2019-2020 fire season in Australia. On the political side, the emphasis is on the overall trends that mark the environmental agenda of different prime ministers over a 25-year period, starting in 1996, especially in relation to control of greenhouse gas emissions. Regarding the environment, the contours of the main climatic phenomena that affect the Aus…
Island Rivers
Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of
Concealment, revelation and cosmological dualism. Visibility, materiality and the spiritscape of the Torres Islands, Vanuatu
Like Leaven in the Dough
In Like Leaven in the Dough: Protestant Social Thought in Latin America, 1920-1950, Carlos Mondragón, offers an introduction to the ideas of notable Protestant writers in Latin America during the first half of the twentieth century. Despite their national and denominational differences, Mondragón argues that Protestant intellectuals developed a coherent set of ideas about freedom of religion and thought, economic justice, militarism, and national…

Faith, fidelity and fantasy
In this and a companion article (in preparation, in which we focus on the perspectives of Pacific islanders), we analyse previously overlooked cultural and historical influences upon Iberian explorers in the Pacific. We concentrate here on the Lusitanian navigator, Pedro Fernández de Quirós, during his visit in 1606 to the island of Espiritu Santo in Vanuatu, where he attempted to found a settlement that he named la Nuebla Hierusalem. By returnin…
Of Winds, Worms and Mana
This paper explores how the expression of 'capacity' (mena, more commonly known as mana in other Oceanic settings) and the evocation of abundance are played out in relation to seasonal change and human-environmental relations, as observed in the Torres Islands, Vanuatu. It considers the importance for communities of North and Central Vanuatu of the appearance of a ubiquitous sea worm known as the Palolo, in combination with the regular motions of…
