Sampling Designs of the National Educational Panel Study
A Note on the Dependence of Health on Age and Education
When investigating relationships between education and health, one has to take age into account. Conditioning on age entails conditioning on surviving, which has been argued to lead to a potential selection bias. In this note, I argue that surviving should be considered as a necessary precondition for the relationships of interest and, therefore, not as a possible source of bias. Qualitative Comparative Analysis
The article discusses interpretations of ‘Qualitative Comparative Analysis' (QCA) proposed by Charles Ragin. The first section argues that QCA can be understood alternatively as a method of data description or as a method for the construction of deterministic functional models. In this chapter, we study the long-term development of women’s employ¬ ment and its relationship to the family cycle in Germany. We describe the changes from 1925 until the end of the Second World War for Germany as a whole and then concentrate on changes in West Germany specifically. Changes in women’s employment in East Germany after the Second World War are not analysed here because they follow broadly the same patterns and processes that are …
Institutions and Occupational Class Mobility
This paper investigates upward mobility in the Danish labour market. The main question is whether the welfare state provides opportunities for upward mobility which are relatively independent of educational and skill barriers. It is argued that Denmark is an interesting test case because it shares, with Germany, a vocational training system which is often believed to suppress mobility and generate rigidity in the labour market.
