Natural history museums are missing an opportunity to present research and collections on YouTube
There have been repeated calls in the US for scientists to communicate the importance of biological collections to both a general public audience and to policy makers. Natural history museums that house both collections and research staff while maintaining online media presences, are well positioned to communicate that value. Our study aims to understand how these museums present themselves and their research and collections via YouTube. We creat…
Communicating biodiversity research on YouTube
Online videos are a popular medium for science communication. These videos can be presented from many perspectives, including scientists sharing their own work or a third-party presenting research findings. A mixed between- and within-subjects experiment ( n = 620) was conducted in the United States to assess the impact of narrative perspective on the communication objectives of increasing knowledge, changing perceptions, and influencing behavior…
Temporary Labour Migration and the “Ceremony of Innocence” of Postwar Labour Law
The article considers the temporary labour migration program in Canada, which catapults workers from the global South into work and wider relations in the global North, in the context of debates swirling around Anglo-American labour law. There is widespread consensus that labour law is experiencing a sustained moment of crisis in the face of neoliberal globalization. Not widely considered is how this crisis relates to temporary labour migration a…
Sacrifice Zones” in the Green Energy Economy
The environmental justice movement validates the grassroots struggles of residents of places which Steve Lerner refers to as “sacrifice zones”: low-income and racialized communities shouldering more than their fair share of environmental harms related to pollution, contamination, toxic waste, and heavy industry. On this account, disparities in wealth and power, often inscribed and re-inscribed through social processes of racialization, are unders…
The abstract subject of the climate migrant
A controversial proposal to build the mammoth ‘Site C’ dam on the Peace River in northwestern Canada offers an opportunity to explore the intersections of climate and migration issues under debate in international environmental governance circles. Site C threatens to flood traditional fishing spots and traplines of Indigenous peoples in the name of the ‘green energy’ economy. We consider how people displaced by renewable energy projects justified…
Migration, development and security within racialised global capitalism
Within international labour migration, received wisdom holds that the migration-development and migration-security couplings co-exist in discord. The migration-development-security relationship is perceived to swing like a pendulum. In this article I reject the simple pendulum formulation which suggests security stands at odds with development. I examine the ways in which migration controls occur through and reproduce racialised global capitalism…
"Troubling "Project Canada
Despite persistent denials, Canada's relationship to the Caribbean is fraught with concerns about imperialism and racism. While we have experienced a resurgence in "critical" theorizing on capitalist imperialism, including a focus on Canada's place in global affairs, these interventions fail to meaningfully address labor migration. In taking seriously the racism–imperialism nexus in the context of Canadian–Caribbean relations, I argue that the Ca…
The emotional geography of prison life
Accounts of prison life consistently describe a culture of mutual mistrust, fear, aggression and barely submerged violence. Often too, they explain how prisoners adapt to this environment—in men’s prisons, at least—by putting on emotional ‘masks’ or ‘fronts’ of masculine bravado which hide their vulnerabilities and deter the aggression of their peers. This article does not contest the truth of such descriptions, but argues that they provide a par…
Comparison of baseline free testosterone and cortisol concentrations between elite and non‐elite female athletes
OBJECTIVES: To compare the baseline free testosterone (T) and cortisol (C) concentrations of elite and non-elite female athletes. METHODS: Eighteen females from different sports (track and field, netball, cycling, swimming, bob skeleton) were monitored over a 12-week period. Baseline measures of salivary free T and C concentrations were taken weekly prior to any training. The elites (n = 9) and non-elites (n = 9) were classified as international …

This paper describes how the digital data and published paper maps for the new 5th edition 1:625,000 scale bedrock geological map of the United Kingdom were created. The map is published in two sheets, North and South, covering Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, England and Wales. The first edition was created in 1948 by the simplification and reduction of more than 500…
Legal Consciousness and Resistance in Carribean Seasonal Agricultural Workers
