Roundtable: Queer/Trans of Color Transits and the Imaginaries of Racial Capitalism
In this roundtable, scholars respond to the following guiding questions of the special issue: Racial capitalism in US scholarship is necessarily and rightfully narrated through the Transatlantic slave trade. While this is a globally relevant history for understanding the past and the present of transnational racial orders, what other histories and present modes of capitalist accumulation are relevant to telling a global history of racial capitali…
Transnational Queer Materialism
The introduction to this special issue takes up the narrations and values produced by the travels of words like queer of color, race, and racial capitalism to both comobilize and retheorize queer of color critique and the content and contours of global racial capitalism. With and beyond the story of US empire and the transatlantic slave trade-from peripheral European engagements with Africa to the circulation of caste in Africa via Indian Ocean w…

Turkey’s queer times: Epistemic Challenges
This article suggests that Turkey’s queer times are co-constitutive with Jasbir Puar’s queer times of homonationalism. If the queer times of homonationalism correspond to a folding of some queers into life and respectability at the cost of rising Islamophobia in the “West,” Turkey’s queer times witnessed the increasing marginalization and “queering” of variously respectable subjects in the name of Islam and strong LGBT organizing against such mar…

Language and social knowledge
In this piece, I argue that a heightened attention to language in Reed's (2011) interpretive epistemic mode will help further theorizing of the relationship between meaning and the social, and hence strengthen the case for interpretation. Reed's (2011) framework of 'landscapes of meaning' would benefit from weaving in the significance of language to meaning-making: both because it would make room for variations in landscapes across (linguistic) s…
Who speaks the language of queer politics? Western knowledge, politico-cultural capital and belonging among urban queers in Turkey
Recent criticisms of queer movements have focused exclusively on homonormativity as defined by LGBT(I) politics’ relationship to the logic of neoliberalism in order to criticize the increasing depoliticization of these movements, and the normativities produced and upheld by them. In this article, based on ethnographic observations and interviews with activist and non-activist queers in İstanbul, Turkey, I show that class informs normativities thr…
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Families
This article reviews new scholarship on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender families. The past decade witnessed rapid expansion of data and strong research designs. The most notable advance was in studies on variation among mostly planned lesbian comother families. Cumulative evidence suggests that although many of these families have comparatively high levels of shared labor and parental investment, they may not be as "genderless" as previou…
