  • Approximate” Wiggle-Match Dating Applied to Early American Museum Objects

    Open Access•Carla S Hadden, Katharine G Napora et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 30

Wiggle-match dating of tree-ring sequences is particularly promising for achieving high-resolution dating across periods with reversals and plateaus in the calibration curve, such as the entire post-Columbian period of North American history. Here we describe a modified procedure for wiggle-match dating that facilitates precise dating of wooden museum objects while minimizing damage due to destructive sampling. We present two case studies, a dugo…

  • The Changing Profile of Tenure-Track Faculty in Archaeology

    Open Access•Justin Cramb, Brandon T Ritchison et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 5

The goal for many PhD students in archaeology is tenure-track employment. Students primarily receive their training by tenure-track or tenured professors, and they are often tacitly expected—or explicitly encouraged—to follow in the footsteps of their advisor. However, the career trajectories that current and recent PhD students follow may hold little resemblance to the ones experienced by their advisors. To understand these different paths and t…

  • Geoarchaeological Analysis of a Dunefield Shell Midden Site in Carrowdough Townland, County Sligo, Ireland

Katharine G Napora, James Bonsall et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2019•References: 3

Few researchers have investigated shell midden sites in western Ireland. Here, we discuss the geoarchaeological approach undertaken at an Atlantic Ocean-facing dunefield shell midden site in County Sligo, Connacht. Ground penetrating radar, magnetic susceptibility, and apparent electrical resistivity were used to map subsurface features and identify possible locations for subsequent augering. Our results show that magnetic susceptibility was the …

  • Radiocarbon Pretreatment Comparisons of Bald Cypress ( Taxodium Distichum ) wood samples from a massive buried deposit on the Georgia Coast, USA

    Open Access•Katharine G Napora, Alexander Cherkinsky et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 27

We sampled individual growth rings from three ancient remnant bald cypress ( Taxodium distichum ) trees from a massive buried deposit at the mouth of the Altamaha River on the Georgia Coast to determine the best technique for radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating pretreatment. The results of our comparison of traditional ABA pretreatment and holocellulose and α-cellulose fractions show no significant differences among the pretreatments ( 14 C tree-ring chro…

  • Choosing a Path to the Ancient World in a Modern Market: The Reality of Faculty Jobs in Archaeology

    Open Access•Robert J Speakman, Carla S Hadden et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2018•Cited by: 9•References: 6

Over the past 30 years, the number of US doctoral anthropology graduates has increased by about 70%, but there has not been a corresponding increase in the availability of new faculty positions. Consequently, doctoral degree-holding archaeologists face more competition than ever before when applying for faculty positions. Here we examine where US and Canadian anthropological archaeology faculty originate and where they ultimately end up teaching.…
