Revisionist Anthropology: Aboriginal North America [and Comments and Reply]
Anthropological discussions of North American Indians and archaeological interpretation of North American prehistory tend to be distorted by biases, some the "cant of conquest," others derived from the structuring principles of the European tradition. Tripartite schemata such as the Three-Age model and premises of oppositional dualism such as the contrast between primitive and civilized should be assumed to come from these structuring principles …

I Pluck My Harp: Musical Acculturation among the Karen of Western Thailand
he music of the Pwo Karen of the Thai-Burmese borderlands is marked by several exotic song styles, each with distinctive instrumental accompaniment. It is the first task of this paper to describe each of three main styles and to trace its probable source in one of several Great Traditions. The presence of these importations then leads us to ask to what degree shared features make it possible to speak of a common Pwo style spanning their diversity…

Ariyaand the Golden Book: A Millenarian Buddhist Sect Among the Karen
Millenarian movements provide a dramatic expression of discontent with the present order and an anticipation of its imminent and radical transformation. When they arise within a context of cultural confrontation, in which the limits of an indigenous culture are seen for the first time against the perspective of an advanced-and advancing-civilization, they may at times incorporate within their vision of the millenial condition some of the desirabl…

Livelihood and Tribal Government on the Klamath Indian Reservation
The capacity to concert action, which is so distinctive an attribute of society, may take many forms, of which the political is the most inclusive. Upon Indian reservations today, the vitality and effectiveness of tribal government may be taken to constitute a dynamic expression of their shared community; and their readiness to enter into relationship with non-Indian entities, either as participant individuals or through the collective instrument…

Passadumkeag, a Red Paint Cemetery, Thirty-Five Years After Moorehead
Present-day knowledge of the Red Paint burial complex in Maine rests chiefly upon the work of Willoughby and of Moorehead, done in the latter part of the last, and the first quarter of the present, century. Without doubt, the most extensive report on the subject is Moorehead's Archaeology of Maine, in which summary accounts of excavations at twelve Red Paint sites were set forth. Unfortunately, certain details pertaining to the burials were obscu…
