Economic instability, ineffective governmental oversight, and bureaucratic inefficiencies have been some of the reasons contributing to a deterioration in Zimbabwean pensioners’ living standards. In understanding the risks associated with the diminishing value of pensions and how post-retirement aspirations and caring commitments are still being met, our study was interested in Zimbabwean pensioners’ experiences with the protection framework. Informed by interviews, government reports, newspaper articles and online material, the article examines the attempts to indigenise some of the country’s biggest mining concerns, like the platinum giants Mimosa, Zimplats and Unki platinum, which are all owned by multinationals. It also delves deeper into the indigenis…

    Sizo Nkala, Olusola Ogunnubi•ARTICLE•Africa Review•2015

In just two decades after the demise of apartheid in South Africa, women’s legislative representation has grown in leaps and bounds rising from nearly nothing to over 40%, which is twice the world average of 20%. While this trend can be attributed to a number of factors, this paper casts a spotlight on the role of the electoral system structure vis-à-vis the changes in women’s representation. The paper investigates how the proportional representa…
