Intimate Partner Violence, Ambiguous and Non‐Consensual Non‐Monogamy, and Breaking Up During Young Adulthood
Objective This study examines how intimate partner violence (IPV) and two types of non‐monogamy—ambiguous‐consent non‐monogamy (ACNM; concurrent sexual partners in relationships without an explicit agreement about monogamy or non‐monogamy) and non‐consensual non‐monogamy (NCNM; cheating in relationships committed to monogamy)—co‐occur and shape the probability of dissolution. Background Ending a relationship can be normative and healthy, particul…
Exposure to Nearby Homicides and Young Women's Reproductive Lives during the Transition to Adulthood
We merge information on the date and location of homicides in Flint, MI with georeferenced weekly panel data from the Relationship Dynamics and Social Life study to assess how and why nearby homicides immediately impact young women's risk of pregnancy. Women's probability of conceiving a pregnancy increased in weeks when homicides occurred within .25 miles of their homes relative to in other weeks. This increase in pregnancy risk reflected decrea…

Mechanisms Linking High Residential Mobility to Decreased Contraceptive Use
While research has demonstrated that high residential mobility has negative consequences for an array of outcomes, particularly among women and young adults, the mechanisms underlying these associations are unclear. The consequences of high residential mobility may be comprised solely of a series of short-term disruptions surrounding individual moves, or there may also be long-term, cumulative effects from repeated moves. High residential mobilit…
A Qualitative Study of Arab-American Perspectives on Intimate Partner Violence in Dearborn, Michigan
Few studies explore how intimate partner violence (IPV) affects Arab Americans. Through focus groups with stakeholders from an Arab-centered health organization and semistructured interviews with Arab-American female clients (18-65 years), we explore how IPV affects Arab-American women and factors that impede and facilitate their access to support services. We find that IPV is a critical concern among Arab Americans and that generational status, …
Black-White Differences in Pregnancy Desire During the Transition to Adulthood
This article explores race differences in the desire to avoid pregnancy or become pregnant using survey data from a random sample of 914 young women (ages 18–22) living in a Michigan county and semi-structured interviews with a subsample of 60 of the women. In the survey data, desire for pregnancy, indifference, and ambivalence are very rare but are more prevalent among Black women than White women. In the semi-structured interviews, although few…
The Prevalence, Frequency and Social Ecology of Sexual Concurrency Among Young Adult Women
Sexual concurrency among young women is prevalent but intermittent, and interventions that address individuals' social-ecological contexts are needed to reduce negative health outcomes
The Dynamics of Intimate Relationships and Contraceptive Use During Early Emerging Adulthood
We investigate the immediate social context of contraceptive behaviors: specifically, the intimate relationship. We use the Relationship Dynamics and Social Life (RDSL) study (2008–2012), based on a random sample of 1,003 women ages 18–19 residing in a Michigan county. Women were interviewed weekly for 2.5 years, resulting in an age range of 18–22. We test three sets of hypotheses about change over time within a relationship, using relationship-l…
Young women's joint relationship, sex, and contraceptive trajectories
OBJECTIVE: We identify common patterns of joint relationship, sex, and contraceptive trajectories in young adulthood and assess how selection into these trajectories differs across socioeconomic and demographic groups and varies with earlier sexual and reproductive experiences and attitudes. METHODS: We draw on a weekly panel of 581 young adult women in the United States that includes granular data on sexual and contraceptive behaviors. We use se…
Intimate Relationship Dynamics and Changing Desire for Pregnancy Among Young Women
Young women's pregnancy desire changes depending on their intimate relationship context, across the range of relationships they experience during the transition to adulthood
Feminist Praxis
Feminist praxis in conference planning and implementation may be a promising approach to addressing the complex issue of gender-based violence in an academic setting. This “In Brief” provides an overview of how the Michigan Meeting on Ending Gender-Based Violence planning committee at the University of Michigan embraced feminist praxis by foregrounding diversity in conference presenters and topics presented; structuring the conference’s formal an…
Sexual Concurrency and Contraceptive Use Among Young Adult Women
Leveraging 2.5 years of weekly data from the Relationship Dynamics and Social Life Study, we investigate the relationship between young women’s sexual concurrency and their contraceptive behavior. Specifically, we (1) examine whether young women changed their contraceptive use when switching from one to multiple concurrent sexual partners in the same week; (2) explore the uniformity of contraceptive responses to concurrency across relationship co…
Dimensions of Reproductive Attitudes and Knowledge Related to Unintended Childbearing Among U.S. Adolescents and Young Adults
Measures of attitudes and knowledge predict reproductive behavior, such as unintended fertility among adolescents and young adults. However, there is little consensus as to the underlying dimensions these measures represent, how to compare findings across surveys using different measures, or how to interpret the concepts captured by existing measures. To guide future research on reproductive behavior, we propose an organizing framework for existi…
Sexual Activity and Weekly Contraceptive Discontinuation and Selection Among Young Adult Women in Michigan
Understanding young women's contraceptive and pregnancy prevention behaviors is important for helping women and their partners control if and when they have children. Prior research on associations between patterns of sexual activity and contraceptive behaviors is limited. We assessed the influence of recent sexual activity on discontinuation and selection of specific contraceptive methods. We used weekly data from the Relationship Dynamics and S…
Sexual activity and weekly contraceptive use among young adult women in Michigan
Past studies on the influence of sexual activity on contraceptive behaviours are inconclusive, relying heavily on cross-sectional data. We used a population-based longitudinal sample of young women in Michigan to evaluate weekly associations between sexual activity and contraceptive use at three levels of measurement: comparing between women, among individual women's partnerships, and from week to week within partnerships. We used multinomial log…

The Dynamics of Intimate Partner Violence and the Risk of Pregnancy during the Transition to Adulthood
Using a reproductive coercion framework, we investigate the role of intimate partner violence (IPV) in pregnancy during the transition to adulthood. We use two types of data from a population-based sample of 867 young women in a Michigan county: a 60-minute survey interview with 2.5 years of weekly follow-up surveys, and semi-structured interviews with a subsample of 40 pregnant women. The semi-structured interviews illustrate the violence women …
Desire for and to Avoid Pregnancy During the Transition to Adulthood
Unintended pregnancies disproportionately occur among teenage women, yet little is known about the determinants of pregnancy desire among this group. The authors use a comprehensive baseline survey and data on pregnancy desires to investigate which unmarried 18- to 20-year-old women want a pregnancy, want to avoid pregnancy, and report consistent pregnancy desire and disinclination. Variables that positively predict pregnancy desire generally neg…
Patterns of Contraceptive Consistency among Young Adult Women in Southeastern Michigan
Perceived Costs and Benefits of Early Childbearing
Young women's perceptions of consequences of early childbearing predict subsequent pregnancy. That these perceptions are distinct from childbearing desires and from other dimensions of costs and benefits illustrates the complex attitudinal underpinnings of reproductive behavior
Black-White Differences in Sex and Contraceptive Use Among Young Women
This study examines black-white and other sociodemographic differences in young women’s sexual and contraceptive behaviors, using new longitudinal data from a weekly journal-based study of 1,003 18- to 19-year-old women spanning 2.5 years. We investigate hypotheses about dynamic processes in these behaviors during early adulthood in order to shed light on persisting racial differences in rates of unintended pregnancies in the United States. We fi…
Social Discrimination, Stress, and Risk of Unintended Pregnancy Among Young Women
Effects of intensive longitudinal data collection on pregnancy and contraceptive use
We use an experiment based on the relationship dynamics and social life study of sexual behavior, pregnancy, and contraceptive use to investigate whether participation in weekly self-reports over one year result in differential effects on related behaviors and attitudes, compared to participation in a one-time follow-up interview requiring retrospective self-reporting for the prior year. We randomly assigned 200 subjects to either a control group…

Contraceptive Method Choice Among Youth in the United States
We examine the relationship characteristics associated with contraceptive method choice within young people’s nonmarital sexual relationships, using data from retrospective relationship histories available in the third wave (2001–2002) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Data-reduction techniques produce a detailed multidimensional characterization of relationship commitment for nonmarital sexual relationships. We then use mu…
