Open Access•Shauny Seynhaeve, Marieke Vanbuel et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2024

In Belgium, several incidents and public debates have highlighted ethnocentric conceptions of the nation held by public opinion and prominent politicians where immigrants and particularly Muslims are marked as the unwilling "others". In this framework, immigrants maintaining ethnic identities and transnational ties is classically seen as weakening their integration in the receiving countries. Based on results drawn from 16 focus group discussions…

Corinne Torrekens, Nawal Bensaïd et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2022

In Belgium, since the first instances of girls wearing headscarves in schools in 1989, the public discussion on the place of Islam and Muslims in Belgian society has been almost constant. That debate has become more polarized in the wake of the attacks of 22 March 2016. The results presented in this paper are drawn from sixteen group discussions and twenty individual semi-structured interviews. We investigate the weight of discrimination processe…

  • The Effects of Neighborhood and Parental Educational Expectations on Teacher Judgments of Children in the Fifth and Sixth Grades of Primary School

    Open Access•Kenneth Hemmerechts, Dimokritos Kavadias et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Education•2022•References: 80

Research has studied less the embeddedness of the relationship between parental educational expectations and teacher judgments in the neighborhood. We use data that were collected in a longitudinal study conducted in Belgium, which focused on children in the fifth and sixth grades of primary school. We found that the effect of neighborhood on teacher judgments is mediated by the nonnative background of students. The effect of neighborhood seems t…

  • Armed Conflict and Religious Adherence Across Countries: A Time Series Analysis

Open Access•Nohemi Jocabeth Echeverria Vicente, Kenneth Hemmerechts et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Religion•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 64

A fundamental question in the comparative sociology of religion is: What are the drivers of cross-national differences in religiosity? The existential insecurity argument raises the expectation of higher levels of religiosity in contexts of social crisis. We test this argument against countries' armed conflict experiences, employing global longitudinal data on religious adherence over almost half a century. We did not find evidence of religious r…

    Open Access•Elham Mansoury Babhoutak, Dimokritos Kavadias et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2020•Cited by: 9•References: 44

Perceived discrimination, the perception of systematic exclusion due to background characteristics, has been studied extensively in general. The political consequences of this perception remain underexplored for adolescents. Discrimination may engender a rejection of common political values such as the support for democratic politics. Using the data of 1789 pupils with an average age of 16 years (grade 10) from 24 schools in Brussels, we focus on…

  • The legacy of country-level experience of armed conflict on emancipative value preferences: A global cross-national study

    Open Access•Nohemi Echeverría, Kenneth Hemmerechts et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 57

This study examines the legacies of large-scale armed conflict on emancipative value preferences from 1946 to 2012. The multilevel analysis indicates that people living in countries with past armed conflict are more likely to endorse less emancipative value preferences. The higher the intensity and the longer the duration of the armed conflict episodes experienced in a country, the greater the impact on values. Our evidence further suggests that …

  • Immigrant students’ educational expectations: The role of religious affiliation and practice

Kenneth Hemmerechts, Dimokritos Kavadias et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Beliefs and Values•2018

A body of scholarly work has emerged on educational expectations. More recently, the relationship between educational expectations and immigrant background in Western Europe has been investigated. Although the results of this type of inquiry show that students with an immigrant background tend to have higher educational expectations, potential explanations of this relationship remain unarticulated. In this article, we investigate whether religiou…

Deze bijdrage onderzoekt welke de mogelijke implicaties van een dergelijke vermindering zouden zijn. Drie scenario’s worden bekeken: een vermindering me…

  • The Order of Human Interdependencies: Simulating Elias' One-level Multi-person Models

Open Access•Kenneth Hemmerechts, Nohemi Jocabeth Echeverria Vicente et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2017•References: 20

Sociologist Norbert Elias made it his lifework to describe and explain long-term processes. According to Elias, these processes cannot be studied voluntaristically by only focusing on human intentions or motivations. This is because they are the unplanned result of a whole spectrum of interactions of different people over time. According to Elias, these interactions between individuals interweave to produce a development that is relatively autono…

  • Drawing Belgium: Using Mental Maps to Measure Territorial Conflict

Min Reuchamps, Dimokritos Kavadias et al.•ARTICLE•Territory Politics Governance•2013•Cited by: 9•References: 14

Governing divided Belgium is not an easy affair. Traditional tools of political research have provided insights about the dynamics of Belgian federalism but they have fallen short in exploring the territorial dimension of the conflict and its political representations within the population. Mental maps, scarcely used hitherto by political scientists, offer an innovative research tool to dig into territorial conflict dynamics since they aim at cap…

  • The Acceptance of the Multicultural Society Among Young People. A Comparative Analysis of the Effect of Market-Driven Versus Publicly Regulated Educational Systems

    Mark Elchardus, E Franck et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2013•References: 23

This paper examines the impact of private, quasi-market versus public steering of educational systems on European youngsters ’ attitudes towards immigrants. There has recently been a drive for a quasi-market strategy in the provision of education, inspired by the hope that this will increase both quality and cost-effectiveness. However, research has shown that this policy leads to greater inequality between schools and individual pupils. In this …

We exemplify that learning from evaluation in complex programme settings is related to the nature of the collaboration between social work agencies and researchers. Findings are based on two similar cases of evaluation research for interagency collab…
