Performance of International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification Codes as an Adverse Drug Event Surveillance System
BACKGROUND: Adverse drug events (ADEs) are one of the most frequent causes of iatrogenic injury. Because International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes are routinely assigned to inpatient discharges, they could provide a method to detect ADEs within a hospital, a state, and the nation. Divorce as Selection, Stress, and Process
This ten-year review first describes three views about divorce as: (1) selection, (2) stress, and (3) process. It then codes 481 scholarly works on divorce published from 1987 through 1996 as criticizing, endorsing, or not mentioning these views. The review assesses the relative influence of these views on the divorce literature. Finally, the review suggests future implications for research and scholarly writing on divorce: (1) the need to apply …

This article considers friendships between fonner spouses on two levcls: research content and process. The content consists of three case studies: (1) a test case in which each fonner spouse confirms the other's personal growth, (2) a negative case in which the former spouses disagree about whether they are friends, and (3) a third case in which the fonner spouses agree that they are friends but describe their friendship diffcrcntly. Within the larger context of modified analytic induction, each of the three case-study couples in this article was selected to address questions that emerged during the research process about the nature and development of friendships between former spouses. Using two indicators of postdivorce attachment, preoccupation and hostility, this article distinguishes between divorced survey respondents' (n = 232) healthy and unhealthy friendship and between healthy and unhealthy hostility toward the ex-spouse.
