Psychological Need Satisfaction and Simultaneous Alcohol and Marijuana Use: A Moderated Mediation Model of Expectancies and Motives
Background: Prior work suggests psychological need satisfaction (PNS) may protect against single-substance alcohol and marijuana use, yet little is known about its association with simultaneous alcohol and marijuana (SAM) use. This study aims to address this gap by examining the link between PNS and SAM use in college students. Further, to better explain the conditions under which PNS associates with SAM use, we also explore SAM use motives as a …
Psychometric Evaluation of the Revised College Eating and Drinking Behaviors Scale (CEDBS-R) to Assess Food and Alcohol Disturbance
Body dissatisfaction, ruminative thinking, food and alcohol disturbance, and alcohol use outcomes among college students
Gender Differences in Normative Misperceptions of Food and Alcohol Disturbance Among a Multi-Site Sample of College Students
Background: Engagement in food and alcohol disturbance (FAD; e.g., restricting caloric intake in the context of using alcohol to quicken/increase intoxication [FAD-intoxication] and/or to offset calories consumed from alcohol [FAD-calories]) confers risk to college students. Much research suggests that students overestimate the frequency of high-risk drinking among their peers, leading to greater participation in personal high-risk drinking. Howe…
Application of Self-Determination Theory to Substance Use and Its Treatment: A Scoping Review of the Literature
Background: Self-determination theory (SDT) may provide important insights for understanding substance misuse and treatment outcomes. However, to date, the literature applying SDT to substance use and its treatment is varied and difficult to integrate. Methods: The authors searched psycINFO and PubMed on October 26th, 2021 to identify articles applying SDT to substance use and its treatment. Eligible studies were published in peer-reviewed articl…
The effectiveness of animal welfare-, environmental-, and health-focused video appeals on implicit and explicit wanting of meat and intentions to reduce meat consumption
The production of meat and its consumption are associated with negative consequences for the environment, the animals raised and slaughtered for food, and the health of those who consume animal-based foods. We investigated whether video appeals that addressed these topics affected participants' wanting of meat and intentions to reduce meat relative to a control video. Results indicated only the environmental video led to increased intentions to r…
Loneliness and Alcohol-Related Problems among College Students Who Report Binge Drinking Behavior: The Moderating Role of Food and Alcohol Disturbance
Loneliness and alcohol misuse are common among college students and pose a threat to public health. To better understand the longitudinal association between these public health concerns we examined food and alcohol disturbance (FAD; i.e., restricting one's caloric intake prior to drinking) as a moderator in the association between loneliness and alcohol-related problems. Participants were 456 college students from a mid-sized university who enga…
Anxiety Symptoms and Alcohol-Related Problems among College Students: A Moderated-Mediation Model of Rumination and Emotion Dysregulation
Objectives: Prior research has individually linked rumination, anxiety, and emotion dysregulation to alcohol misuse, but limited research has examined a comprehensive model linking these variables together. The present study tested a moderated-mediation model to examine whether emotion dysregulation moderated the indirect association of anxiety symptoms on alcohol-related problems via ruminative thinking styles. Method: Participants were 448 coll…
