  • Years On

    Wayne Scott•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 6

This is a personal reflection on the first 25 years of the journal, Environmental Education Research. It begins in the 1990s with the ideas behind the need for a new journal and explores the journal’s early years as it established itself. The paper then looks at two quite different papers from Volume 1 of the journal that identified issues that remain pertinent today, albeit in the very changed social context that we now experience where rapid cl…

  • The World We'll Leave Behind

Wayne Scott, William Scott et al.•BOOK•World We'll Leave Behind•2018

It is now clear that human activity has influenced how the biosphere supports life on Earth, and given rise to a set of connected environmental and social problems. In response to the challenge that these problems present, a series of international conferences and summits led to discussions of sustainable development and the core dilemma of our time: How can we all live well, now and in the future, without compromising the ability of the planet t…

Financing retirement is a major concern, especially for women. The present paper reviews significant changes to Australian retirement incomes that require greater individual responsibility for saving, planning, and managing retirement finances. Data on women's financial situation and planning for retirement, and the possible reasons for their limited superannuation accumulations, are explored. The implications for social work of the requirement t…

  • Learning for a Change

Open Access•Paul Vare, Wayne Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Education for…•2007

Whether we view sustainable development as our greatest challenge or a subversive litany, every phase of education is now being urged to declare its support for education for sustainable development (ESD). In this paper, we explore the ideas behind ESD and, building on work by Foster and by Scott and Gough, we argue that it is necessary now to think of two complementary approaches: ESD 1 and ESD 2. We see ESD 1 as the promotion of informed, skill…

    Andrew Stables, Wayne Scott•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2002•Cited by: 7•References: 10

Sustainable development' is a 'paradoxical compound policy slogan' (Stables, 1996), of a type rhetorically constructed to appeal simultaneously to apparently opposed interest groups, and is widely recognised to be a contested notion. Indeed, structuralist and post-structuralist theories hold that no terms can have uncontested, stable meanings--even 'education'. Notwithstanding, environmental education (EE) has often been associated with a quest f…

This paper critically examines recent work on the concept of action competence. This is seen as a set of capabilities which equip people with the ability to take purposive and focused action, and which embodies a democratic commitment to be participants in the continuing sha…
