Hospital and Temple
When the fall of Acre in 1291 led to the loss of their powerful position in Syria the military-religious orders of the Hospital and Temple had to adjust to a restricted establishment on Cyprus. The two orders had much in common but they also displayed significant differences. The Hospital intervened in defence of Cilician Armenia; the Templars looked to the recuperation of Jerusalem, a policy which led to a military disaster on the islet of Ruad …
Philibert de Naillac, Master of Rhodes
Philibert de Naillac belonged to the nobility of Berri. He entered the military-religious order of the Hospital and by 1374 held the Commandery of Lureil in the Priory of Auvergne; in 1390 he became Prior of Aquitaine and was due to travel to Rhodes. Apparently in 1395 he again left for Rhodes where, probably on 6 May 1396, he was elected Master. Soon after he led a Hospitaller contingent into the Black Sea and up the Danube to Nikopolis to join …
A Hospitaller despropriamentum
A Hospitaller, being vowed to poverty, could not make a will but might dispose of goods he held by making a despropriamentum. Written examples are rare but Fr. Barras de Barras made such bequests at Dubrovnik in 1396; his wealth was notably limited. He fell ill while King Sigismund of Hungary, returning from defeat by the Turks at Nikopolis on the Danube where the Hospitallers rescued him, had stopped at Dubrovnik
The Hospitaller Background of the Teutonic Order
This article examines the foundation in 1190/1191 of a German field hospital outside the walls of Acre during its siege by the Christians studied against a background of Hospitaller affairs in Jerusalem before its loss in 1187. The article relies on contemporary texts rather than the myths which rapidly appeared, while documents issued by the papal chancery suggest misunderstandings of the situation in Syria. The field hospital was the creation o…
Saint Ubaldesca di Calcinaia
aint Ubaldesca was one of the earliest and most celebrated of the beati of the military-religious Order of Saint John of Jerusalem though, like most of the Hospital's saints, she was never formally canonized. 1 The Order's saints were not military martyrs and some of the most distinguished, such as Saint Ubaldesca at Pisa and Saint Toscana at Verona, were not professed Hospitallers. 2 An important exception was Saint Flor, who died in 1347; she w…
Juan Fernández de Heredia’s History of Greece
The Aragonese Hospitaller Juan Fernández de Heredia, Master of Rhodes from 1377 to 1396, was an outstanding patron of historical compilations, all of them translated into Aragonese. He promoted the earliest translations into any western language of Plutarch’s Lives, of parts of Thucydides and of Zonaras’ Epitome of Byzantine history; he also produced a version of the Chronicle of the Morea with an entirely original section which covered much of t…

Plundering ancient treasures at Bodrum (Halicarnassus)
The document published here is a commercial letter concerned mainly with a tomb discovered at Bodrum, the site of ancient Halicarnassus and of the Mausoleum which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.' The Hospitallers from Rhodes had begun to construct the castle of St Peter at Bodrum in 1407/8. A few stones which had once been in the walls of the terrace surrounding the Mausoleum were apparently being reused in the castle by 1437, …

VII. The Papal Palace and other Fourteenth-Century Buildings at Sorgues near Avignon
John XXII, elected as the second of the Avignon popes on 7 August 1316 at the age of seventy-two, built extensively in the territories around that city as well as initiating works in Avignon itself. In 1318 he began the construction of a palace on the edge of the small town of Sorgues, situated some nine kilometres north of Avignon at a point on the line of the old Roman road to Orange where there was a bridge across the river Ouvèze, a major tri…

Two Templar-Hospitaller Preceptories North of Tuscania
Very little work has so far been published on the Templars and Hospitallers in the area north of Rome, so that this study of the two preceptories of San Savino and Castell'Araldo makes a contribution to the history of both Orders. Archaeological investigations of Hospitaller and Templar preceptories or commanderies have been made in a number of countries. In this present case there was no excavation, but the combination of a careful survey on the…

Venice and the Knights Hospitallers of Rhodes in the Fourteenth Century
In Gentile Bellini's painting of a Venetian festa a knight of the Order of St. John stands alone in the Piazza of San Marco. He is dressed in a black cloak adorned with the eight-pointed cross of the Hospitallers and is attended by a single page. The ecclesiastical and lay dignitaries of the Republic file solemnly past; but he has no part in the ceremony and his posture suggests an awareness that the presence of the Order was resented. For two ce…

The Latins of Argos and Nauplia
During the fourteenth century the Latins' hold on those fragments of the great empire of Romania which they had acquired after the overthrow of the Byzantine emperor in 1204 became increasingly precarious. In the Morea, as the Peloponnese was then known, the foremost Frankish houses, the Villehardouin, the Courtenay, the de la Roche and others, were extinguished. The French magnates faced hostility not only from the Greeks and Turks, but also fro…
