This article examines clothing practices within the square dance community in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, whose members are mainly older adults in the 60–80 age range. What square dancers call ‘traditional dress’ is no longer required and is, even, overtly criticized by those seeking to update the image of square dance, but it remains the favourite of long-time dancers. Pathways Into and Out of Homelessness
Housing insecurity is a major barrier to leaving domestic violence; it may force abused women to live in inadequate conditions or to return to their abusers. Immigrant women face additional barriers. Longitudinal interviews with 37 abused immigrant women living in three Canadian cities investigated key causes of housing insecurity. This article examines the everyday work of participating in pharmaceutical treatment for HIV infection in the context of urgent calls for adherence. Drawing on interviews and focus-group conversations with people taking antiretroviral drugs, the analysis explicates the work that goes into striving for adherence.
