  • Weak determinism and the computational consequences of interaction

Open Access•Eric Meinhardt, Anna Mai et al.•ARTICLE•Natural Language and Linguistic…•2024•References: 42

Recent work has claimed that (non-tonal) phonological patterns are subregular (Heinz 2011a,b, 2018; Heinz and Idsardi 2013), occupying a delimited proper subregion of the regular functions—the weakly deterministic (WD) functions (Heinz and Lai 2013; Jardine 2016). Whether or not it is correct (McCollum et al. 2020a), this claim can only be properly assessed given a complete and accurate definition of WD functions. We propose such a definition in …

  • Phonological contrasts are maintained despite neutralization

Open Access•Anna Mai, Stéphanie K Riès et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2022

The existence of language-specific abstract sound-structure units (such as the phoneme) is largely uncontroversial in phonology. However, whether the brain performs abstractions comparable to those assumed in phonology has been difficult to ascertain. Using intracranial electroencephalography (EEG) recorded during a passive listening task, this study investigates the representation of phonological units in the brain and the relationship between t…

  • Comparing Positional Licensing Patterns in HG and OT

Open Access•Eric Baković, Anna Mai•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2021

Positional licensing refers to the observation that elements (e.g. particular feature values or feature value combinations) can be limited to specific positions (e.g. syllable onsets, initial syllables, stressed syllables, etc.). Positional licensing patterns have been analyzed using either positional markedness or positional faithfulness constraints in OT and HG. In this paper we demonstrate that the predictions of OT and HG diverge in deep but …

  • Unbounded circumambient patterns in segmental phonology

Open Access•Adam G Mccollum, Adam Mccollum et al.•ARTICLE•Phonology•2020

We present an empirical challenge to Jardine's (2016) assertion that only tonal spreading patterns can be unbounded circumambient, meaning that the determination of a phonological value may depend on information that is an unbounded distance away on both sides. We focus on a demonstration that the ATR harmony pattern found in Tutrugbu is unbounded circumambient, and we also cite several other segmental spreading processes with the same general ch…

  • Cumulative constraint interaction and the equalizer of OT and HG

Open Access•Anna Mai, Eric Baković•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2020

We show that, in general, Optimality Theory (OT) grammars containing a restricted family of locally-conjoined constraints (Smolensky 2006) make the same typological predictions as corresponding Harmonic Grammar (HG) grammars. We provide an intuition for the generalization using a simple constrast and neutralization typology, as well as a formal proof. This demonstration adds structure to claims about the (non)equivalence of HG and OT with local c…

  • Ja'a Kumiai

Open Access•Anna Mai, Andrés Aguilar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Kumiai (Kumeyaay, formerly known as Diegueño; ISO code: DIH) is an endangered Yuman language of the Delta-California subgroup spoken across the Mexico-US border by approximately 150 people (Golla 2011). There are two major sets of Kumiai varieties: Northern Kumiai (Ipai/'Iipay) and Southern Kumiai (Tipai/Tiipay) (Golla 2011). A third cluster of varieties, located in southeastern San Diego County, is proposed in Langdon (1991) and Miller (2001). T…

  • Diurnal profiles of pedometer-determined physical activity in chronically ill and mobility-limited older adults

Open Access•Anna Mai, Alexander Bloch et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

This is the first study to explore pedometer-determined diurnal profiles of physical activity in chronically ill and mobility-limited older adults. Prolonging periods of elevated physical activity in the afternoon while respecting individual daily routine and commitments could be one option for facilitating the integration of physical activity and for making it a habit in older adults' daily lives. The use of a walking aid seems to be an indicato…
