Book Commerce Book Carnival
Book-based cultural and commercial events are the subject of this special issue, BOOK COMMERCE BOOK CARNIVAL. From the foundation of the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1454 to the growth of the festival format in the postwar period to the proliferation of digital and live events in the twenty-first century, book fairs and festivals have shaped book cultures and publishing industries. The history of these events has by now been well established
Experiments with Book Festival People (Real and Imaginary)
While there are multiple approaches to researching cultural events, predominant academic frames tend to be either sociological or situated within a creative industries discourse. Neither of these approaches have supported sustained engagement with individual, interior experience at book festivals. Creative writers have imaginatively depicted these sites of author-reader interaction, and developing scholarship focuses on autoethnography and the ph…
The Frankfurt Book Fair and Bestseller Business
The Frankfurt Book Fair is the leading global industry venue for rights sales, facilitating business-to-buzzness deals and international networks. In this Element, we pursue an Ullapoolist approach to excavate beneath the production of bestsellers at the Fair. Our investigation involved three consecutive years of fieldwork (2017-2019) including interviews and autoethnographic, arts-informed interventions. The Element argues that buzz at the Fair …
The Epistemology of Ullapoolism
This article proposes Ullapoolism, a post-data, activist, autoethnographic epistemology for contemporary book culture studies. It begins by addressing the challenges of contemporaneity and multidisciplinarity in researching the creation, circulation and use of books. We identify a rigidity that limits existing theoretical frameworks for the study of book cultures, and a paucity in existing research modes—including those from literary sociology, t…
Fat Lip Readers Theatre
Fat Lip Readers Theatre (1981–1999) was a collective of fat women from the San Francisco Bay Area. Their mission was exposing discrimination in our fat-phobic society and offering an alternative paradigm by using theater to present stories of their lives with a fat feminist political agenda. They wrote, spoke, sang, and danced on stages far and wide. Utilizing a Q&A format, Laura Bock and Carol Squires share their experiences in Fat Lip Readers T…
The First Rule of Judging Club
Book awards are a pervasive aspect of contemporary book culture, attracting both substantial media and scholarly attention. They confer prestige, create marketing opportunities, push sales, and contribute to the early stages of canon formation. Yet, beyond occasional media splashes when judges break ranks and disagree, there is little insight into the administrative and decision-making processes inside book awards. This article draws on the autoe…

Infantile Sexuality and Attachment
Attachment and Infantile Sexuality
The study of relational disturbances is not on the same level as the study of individuals: it takes in to account the quality of the relations as well as their content. The modeling of interactions includes its sequence: the way in which interactions follow one another ("patterning"). Regulation in the physical and psychological well-being of the two partners involves the reciprocity and mutuality in the attention directed to others. Attachment i…
A Training Program for Improving the Informed Consent Discussion Between Clinical Researchers and Their Subjects
Although there are many training programs on informed consent, they seldom model the contextual factors that support the vital elements of communication, including presentation style, body language, providing a comfortable environment, utilizing clear language, and establishing overall rapport with the subject. A team of clinicians at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) created a pilot program that consists of a video ( http://www.yout…
Improving Recruitment in Clinical Trials
There is a need to explore why protocol-eligible subjects refuse participation in clinical trials. Without a clear understanding, participation by representative populations will be an ongoing obstacle to recruitment. This descriptive research study analyzes frequency data regarding a sample of 965 individuals who, despite being eligible for studies with the National Institute of Mental Health intramural program, declined research participation. …
