  • Woman-Not-Woman: Abjection and Gender Transformation in Las Fiestas de Santiago

    Open Access•Alejandro Escalante•ARTICLE•Religion and Gender•2025

During the yearly patronal festival las fiestas en honor a Santiago Apóstol ( las fiestas ), men from Loíza, Puerto Rico, transform themselves to become madwomen whose ribald and bawdy behaviour transgresses personal and religious boundaries of decency. In Christian colonial contexts, ‘decency’ is a racialised way of prescribing gender and sexual norms that posit the white Christian, heterosexual, male as ideal personhood. Known as la loca , this…

  • Que Ricky Renuncia: Protest-as-Care and Saintly Devotion in Loíza, Puerto Rico

    Alejandro Escalante•ARTICLE•Transforming Anthropology•2024•References: 17

This article examines the relationship between care, protest, and religious life in the Afro–Puerto Rican city of Loíza. Situated during El Verano Boricua (Puerto Rican Summer) in summer 2019, it pays particular attention to the way a devotee of Santiago Apóstol, driven by his hagiographic life in Loíza, was compelled to join in protests and demonstrations that demanded the resignation of then-governor Ricardo “Ricky” Rosselló. I attended protest…

  • Trans* Atlantic Religion

    Alejandro Escalante•ARTICLE•TSQ Transgender Studies Quarterly•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This article is about spirit possession in Cuban Santería and how the relationship between an orisha and their devotee reveals an unstable gender identity that avails itself to trans* studies. Taking an ethnographic scene from the work of Aisha M. Beliso-De Jesús, wherein a female devotee named Belkis is possessed by her male orisha Changó, this article argues that Santería offers a genderqueer way of understanding the relationship between gods a…

  • The Long Arc of Islamophobia: African Slavery, Islam, and the Caribbean World

    Alejandro Escalante•ARTICLE•Journal of Africana Religions•2019•References: 3

This article positions “Islamophobia” in the context of transatlantic slavery, arguing that in order to understand the long history of anti-Muslim bias in the Americas, one must understand anti-Black and anti-African sentiments in Europe. The proposed reorientation illustrates the coimbrication of anti-African and anti-Black biases implicitly present in “Islamophobia.”

  • Biblical Porn: Affect, Labor, and Pastor Mark Driscoll’s Evangelical Empire, by Jessica Johnson

    Open Access•Alejandro Escalante•ARTICLE•Religion and Gender•2019

  • From Argentina to Scotland to Mexico: Indecent Theology and Erotic Phenomenology at the Mexico-US Border

    Open Access•Alejandro Escalante, Alejandro Stephano Escalante•ARTICLE•Feminist Theology•2018

During an immersion course at the Mexico-US border in January 2015, I encountered the stark juxtaposition between ‘liberation theologies’ and ‘library theologies.’ The gulf that separates these two is not just a class barrier, but is also racialized and linguistic. This article argues that in order to bring the indecent theology of Marcella Althaus-Reid to places like the borderlands, a theological bridge must be constructed that takes seriously …
