Success and Failure in the Secondary School
Towards a socio‐psychological view of school achievement

Towards the Interpretation of Children's Lie Scale Scores
S ummary . The relationship between the JEPI lie scale and two measures of conformity was examined in groups of successful and unsuccessful boys in three secondary schools. The conformity measure in which the items made explicit reference to the need for compliant, approval‐seeking behaviour showed consistently positive relationships across all groups, while the implicit measure did not. S ummary . The relationship of two motivational measures, n/achievement and neuroticism, with expressed achievement motivation was examined in groups of successful and unsuccessful secondary school boys in a three‐way analysis of variance. A Follow-up Study of School Achievement in Relation to Personality
The relationships between extraversion, neuroticism and the school achievements of a group of 128 boys at the ages of 12, 13 and 14 in a grammar school were examined using the method of 'zone analysis.' In the 11+ tests, no systematic differences between the groups were noted, but once in the secondary school, introverts obtained progressively higher marks in yearly examinations than extroverts. In introverts, low neuroticism is consistently asso…
The Teacher's Role
A role definition instrument was constructed consisting of twenty-two statements of expectations for teacher behaviour in four role sectors-organisation, general aims, motivation, and classroom management; 268 female student-teachers and 183 head teachers of primary and secondary schools completed the role definition schedules. Mean response scores and measures of consensus were computed. Students were categorised by year of training and professi…
