C.C. Macknight & LA.

Under One Flag
In 1980, the Northern Territory conducted its first election as a self-governing state. Under One Flag tells the story of that milestone. It describes the newly-founded political partie, their structure, how they chose their candidates, deals in details with every electorate, analyses the poll results and discusses the important issues - isolation from the rest of Australia, resource development, race relations and Aboriginal land rights. Under O…

The I La Galigo Epic Cycle of South Celebes and Its Diffusion
The I La Galigo epic cycle is one of the most remarkable works of literature to be found in Indonesia. It consists of a large body of poetry written in an old form of the Buginese language and recounting a series of linked stories. This paper introduces the cycle and traces some of the results of its diffusion into areas beyond its point of origin in South Celebes. In particular, variations in the role of its chief character, Sawerigading, are de…
The nature of early maritime trade
Several points about the nature of maritime trade are illustrated with examples from eastern Indonesia. Among these are the influence of seasonal wind direction, the role of entrepôts, and the effect of fashion and other concepts of custom or law on trade. It is suggested that the prehistorian needs an awareness of such ethnographic and historical material to direct and control his imagination
