Hope Deferred? Against the Dogma of Delay
Douglas A. Campbell, Framing Paul
Taking the tour
This article positions Carl Shuker’s Anti Lebanon (2013) as a postcolonial text that both identifies and examines the role of a romantic symbolic in the semiotic structures of a neocolonial modernity. The article discusses this romanticism primarily in two ways: as a Baudrillardian simulacral economy of signs and tropes, but also, drawing on the work of romantic scholars like Alan Liu and Jerome McGann, as an engine of repetition by which the rom…
How Greek was Paul's Eschatology
At the 69th Annual Meeting of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas (SNTS), held in Szeged, Hungary, three scholars were invited to debate the theme of the Greek element in Paul's eschatology – a theme proposed by Prof Udo Schnelle, President of SNTS for 2014. The three contrasting presentations, intended primarily for oral delivery, are published here. It is intended that this ‘Quaestiones Disputatae’ format will be a regular feature of the Soc…
Israel's Scriptures in Paul's narrative theology
Study of Paul's use of Scripture has searched for 'allusions' and 'echoes', generating a reaction which claims that Paul could not have intended such detailed reference because his hearers would not have understood it. This article develops the former quest, and answers the latter objection, with the suggestion that Paul saw the larger story of Israel coming to fruition in the gospel: his allusions and echoes are to earlier moments in the single …
The Task of the Tusitala
This article argues that Tusiata Avia’s first volume of poetry, Wild Dogs Under My Skirt (2004), is premised on the recognition of the poet’s work as first and foremost that of the translator. Moreover, Wild Dogs perpetuates an investigation of the politics of translation by pursuing its own interpretation of what Samoan culture refers to as the va — the indefinable concept (or more properly, non-concept) of spatial and temporal relation and diff…
Poetry and Theology in Colossians 1. 15–20
In this article I shall argue for two points: first, that Col 1. 15–20 exhibits, without the deletion of any of its parts, a clear structure which can, in some meaningful senses, be called ‘poetic’; second, that the passage, read as a poem in the way I shall suggest, exhibits a characteristically Pauline form of what we may call Christological monotheism. This will point on to some further suggestions regarding the place of the passage within Col…
