  • Choosing Where to Fight

    Open Access•Michael A Jensen, Neil Ferguson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2023•References: 8

Why did some American citizens choose to travel to fight in Syria and Iraq rather than engage in Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS)-inspired terrorism in the United States? We conducted a social network analysis (SNA) on a sample ( n = 224) of extremists who either plotted ISIS-inspired attacks within the United States or attempted to travel to Syria or Iraq to join the group between 2013-2020. We test how network size, network interconnected…

  • Gendering Experiences of Anti-Semitism

    Open Access•Michael A Jensen•ARTICLE•European Journal of Jewish Studies•2022

Little is known about the gendered dimension of anti-Semitism. Emerging from a literature review on social identity theory, anti-Semitism, sexism, and Jewish feminism, I demonstrate the urgency of examining the link between gender and experiences of anti-Semitism, using the FRA ’s 2018 dataset “Experiences and Perceptions of Antisemitism: Second Survey on Discrimination and Hate Crime against Jews in the EU,” a large-scale survey of Jews in thirt…

  • QAnon-inspired violence in the United States

    Michael A Jensen, Sheehan Kane•ARTICLE•Behavioral Sciences of Terrorism…•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 3

National security experts in the United States have recently warned that the QAnon conspiracy theory is a danger that could soon rival more traditional terrorist threats. Are their fears warranted? Are QAnon supporters like other U.S. extremists? This paper addresses these questions by examining 100 QAnon sympathizers who committed crimes in the United States through August 2021. We argue that while QAnon presents a danger, it is not a traditiona…

  • Contextualizing Disengagement

Michael A Jensen, Michael Jensen et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Conflict and Terrorism•2020•Cited by: 4

This paper explores how obstacles to disengagement and push and pull factors combine to produce pathways out of extremism. Using Qualitative Comparative Analysis and a sample of 50 far-right extremists in the United States, including 25 who disengaged and 25 who did not, we show how certain exit barriers, like the presence of extremist family members, poor social mobility, and past criminal convictions, determine which push and pull factors are c…

  • Radicalization to Violence

Michael A Jensen, Anita Atwell Seate et al.•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•2020•Cited by: 13

Prior research on extremism has identified a host of psychological, emotional, material, and group-based mechanisms that are potentially important drivers of individual radicalization. However, taken on their own, none of these factors have been shown to lead to extremist behaviors. Instead, radicalization is best understood as a set of complex causal processes in which multiple factors work together to produce extremist outcomes. This paper buil…

  • Correlates of Violent Political Extremism in the United States

    Open Access•G Lafree, Michael A Jensen et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•2018•Cited by: 42•References: 120

Although research on terrorism has grown rapidly in recent years, few scholars have applied criminological theories to the analysis of individual‐level political extremism. Instead, researchers focused on radicalization have drawn primarily from political science and psychology and have overwhelmingly concentrated on violent extremists, leaving little variation in the dependent variable. With the use of a newly available data set, we test whether…

  • The Realism Reader

Michael A Jensen, Colin Elman et al.•BOOK•Realism Reader•2014

The Realism Reader provides broad coverage of a centrally important tradition in the study of foreign policy and international politics. After some years in the doldrums, political realism is again in contention as a leading tradition in the international relations sub-field. Divided into three main sections, the book covers seven different and distinctive approaches within the realist tradition: classical realism, balance of power theory, neorea…

  • A Strategy for Success

    Open Access•Michael A Jensen•ARTICLE•International Studies Review•2006•References: 4

How do the weak prevail in conflicts with significantly stronger opponents? This is the central question in Ivan Arreguín-Toft's How the Weak Win Wars: A Theory of Asymmetric Conflict. According to Arreguín-Toft, the basic presumption that power trumps all other factors in determining who is victorious in battle is historically untenable. With increasing frequency, the weak have been defeating the strong. As Arreguín-Toft notes (pp. 5–6, 20), the…

  • System-level microwave design

    D E Crockett, D V Arnold et al.

Two laboratory projects-a Doppler radar and a synthetic aperture radar (SAR)-designed to augment traditional electromagnetics education are proposed. The projects introduce students to component and system level design and expose them to modern computer-aided design (CAD) tools, microstrip and surface mount fabrication technologies, and industry standard test equipment and procedures. Additionally, because the projects result in a working radar s…

  • Laboratory Project in Wireless FSK Receiver Design

Cynthia Furse, Robert J Woodward et al.

This paper describes a wireless local area network laboratory project that provides senior and first-year graduate students in microwave engineering courses the opportunity to design, build, and test several passive microstrip components and integrate them into a working system. Students design filters, couplers, amplifiers, diode detectors, quarter-wave transformers, antennas, and stub matching networks in weekly labs that parallel-lectures in a…
