    Open Access•Grace M Barnes, Joseph H Hoffman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2006•Cited by: 52•References: 32

From socialization theory, it was hypothesized that parental support and monitoring as well as peer deviance would influence individual trajectories of alcohol misuse, other substance use, and delinquency. Six waves of data were analyzed using interviews with 506 adolescents in a general population sample. Results from multilevel modeling showed that monitoring significantly predicted adolescents' initial levels (intercepts) of alcohol misuse and…

  • Gambling Participation in the U.S.—Results from a National Survey

Open Access•John W Welte, Masao Fukushima et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Gambling Studies•2002

Demographic patterns of gambling participation in the U.S. were examined. A national telephone survey was conducted with 2,630 representative U.S. residents aged 18 or older. The sample as weighted for analysis was 48% male, 12% black, and 11% Hispanic. Respondents were questioned on 15 types of gambling: how often they played and how much they won or lost. Eighty-two percent gambled in the past year. Lottery was the most commonly played game, wh…

John W Welte, J Welte et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Studies on Alcohol and…•2001

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to determine the prevalence and demographic distribution of problem gambling, pathological gambling, alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence in the United States, and to examine the co-occurrence of gambling pathology and alcohol pathology in the United States. METHOD: A representative sample (N = 2,638) of U.S. adults age 18 and older was surveyed in the year 2000 using computer-assisted telephone interviewing. Re…

  • Schooling and Delinquency among White and African American Adolescents

    Open Access•Kristin E Voelkl, John W Welte et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Education•1999•Cited by: 7•References: 24

Adolescent delinquency may be a likely consequence of negative school experiences, including poor academic performance, low class attendance, and dropping out. Given disparate experiences that African American and White students often encounter in school, this investigation examined the link between delinquency and school behaviors separately for White and African American males at risk for delinquency. In addition, it asked whether school experi…

  • Alcohol consumption among the elderly in a general population, Erie County, New York

    Amy L Mirand, John W Welte•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1996•Cited by: 2•References: 31

OBJECTIVES. Relatively few studies of drinking among the elderly have been completed despite the growing proportional representation of the elderly in the US population. This study sought to estimate the prevalence of and to observe whether active or health-oriented lifestyles are associated with heavy drinking among the elderly. METHODS. Random-digit dialing telephone interviews were conducted with 2325 Erie County, New York, general population …

  • Race, Class, and Gender Differences in Substance Abuse: Evidence of Middle-Class/Underclass Polarization among Black Males

    Michael P Farrell, Michael Farrell et al.•ARTICLE•Social Problems•1993•Cited by: 6•References: 5

In this study differences in alcohol and illicit drug use were examined in relation to Wilson's theory of class polarization within the black population. With data from a large representative sample of the adult population in New York State, regression analysis showed that the relationship between socioeconomic status and substance abuse is stronger for black males than for any other group. These findings are consistent with Wilson's (1987) theor…

  • Alcohol drinking patterns and blood pressure

Mona Russell, M Lynne Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1991•Cited by: 2•References: 10

BACKGROUND: Although blood pressure tends to increase with average alcohol consumption, little is known about the effects of drinking patterns on blood pressure. Therefore, the effects of average drinks per day and drinking pattern (defined as the independent and interactive effects of quantity and frequency) on blood pressure were compared. METHODS: Data were obtained from a random sample survey of 1,635 household residents in Erie County, New Y…

  • Causal models of adolescent substance use: An examination of gender differences using distribution-free estimators

Michael Windle, Grace M Barnes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1989•References: 3

On the basis of previous literature (Hays, Widaman, DiMatteo, & Stacey, 1987; Huba, Wingard, & Bentler, 1981), four alternative causal models of substance use were specified, estimated, and evaluated for adequacy of statistical fit for samples of White male (N = 9,164) and female (N = 8,421) adolescents. Results supported the adequacy of a four-variable simplex model, in which alcohol use predicted marijuana use, and marijuana use predicted enhan…

  • Patterns and predictors of alcohol use among 7-12th grade students in New York State.

Grace M Barnes, John W Welte•ARTICLE•Journal of Studies on Alcohol and…•1986

A survey was conducted to determine prevalence and patterns in the use of alcohol and other substances among 7-12th grade students in New York State. Of this representative sample of 27,335 secondary school students, 71% are drinkers and 13% are heavy drinkers, i.e., they drink at least once a week and typically consume 5 or more drinks per occasion. White and American Indian students have higher rates of drinking and of heavy drinking than do Hi…

  • Adolescent Alcohol Abuse: Subgroup Differences and Relationships to Other Problem Behaviors

    Open Access•Grace M Barnes, John W Welte•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•1986•Cited by: 8•References: 1

Alcohol is the most widely used-and abused-drug by American youth. Because of the prevalence of youthful alcohol abuse, there is increasing public attention toward developing alcohol-specific prevention and treatment programs for adolescents. However, studies also show that youthful alcohol abuse is associated with a variety of other adolescent problem behaviors, such as illicit drug use and delinquency. These associations have provided empirical…
