  • Dobbs , Gender Animus, and the Impact on Abortion Providers

    Open Access•Lori Brown, Alesha E Doan et al.•ARTICLE•Women & Politics•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 20

In this article we engage in a critical legal analysis of the Supreme Court's decision in (Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization). We argue that by refusing to connect opposition to abortion with "invidiously discriminatory animus against women" (2246), the Court successfully insulated itself from having to consider the devastating impact overturning Roe v. Wade (Roe) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (Casey) would have on women's lives with…

  • Social-ecological systems as complex adaptive systems: Modeling and policy implications

Open Access•Simon A Levin, Simon Levin et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Development…•2013

Systems linking people and nature, known as social-ecological systems, are increasingly understood as complex adaptive systems. Essential features of these complex adaptive systems – such as nonlinear feedbacks, strategic interactions, individual and spatial heterogeneity, and varying time scales – pose substantial challenges for modeling. However, ignoring these characteristics can distort our picture of how these systems work, causing policies …

  • Are We Consuming Too Much

    Open Access•Kenneth Arrow, Kenneth J Arrow et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2004•Cited by: 25•References: 27

This paper articulates and applies frameworks for examining whether consumption is excessive. We consider two criteria for the possible excessiveness (or insufficiency) of current consumption. One is an intertemporal utility-maximization criterion: actual current consumption is deemed excessive if it is higher than the level of current consumption on the consumption path that maximizes the present discounted value of utility. The other is a susta…

  • Genes and Cultures: What Creates Our Behavioral Phenome

    Paul Ehrlich, Marcus Feldman•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2003•Cited by: 12•References: 56

A central theme of the flood of literature in recent years in evolutionary psychology and behavioral genetics is that much or even most human behavior has been programmed into the human genome by natural selection. We show that this conclusion is without basis. Evolutionary psychology is a series of justso stories rooted in part in the erroneous notion that human beings during the Pleistocene all lived in the same environment of evolutionary adap…

  • At War in the Fields of Play: Current Perspectives on the Nature and Treatment of Adolescent Chemical Dependency

Martha A Morrison, David E Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•1993

While the numbers of adolescents entering drug abuse treatment are not increasing dramatically, those entering treatment are getting sicker, according to clinical reports. Adolescents are entering treatment with multiple problems, including severe learning disorders, borderline personality disorders, multiple diagnoses of addiction, mental health and physical problems (including HIV/AIDS), and issues arising from child abuse and incest. A case st…

  • Cocaine Recovery Support Groups and the Language of Recovery

P R Ehrlich, Paul Ehrlich et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•1985

The authors have attempted to make clear that recovery is a lifelong process. In its early phases, clients are working primarily to achieve relief from guilt and pain created by their addiction. As recovery progresses, however, there is a movement from a relief mentality to a true experience of delight (Enright 1980). The goals of treatment have been achieved when this shift is evident: when one is living comfortably, responsibly and joyfully wit…
