  • Border crossing

    Open Access•Graham H Roberts•ARTICLE•Queer Studies in Media & Popular…•2020

In 2012, British contemporary artist Grayson Perry undertook a journey from Sunderland in northern England to the Cotswolds in the south. His stated aim was to explore the relationship between class and taste in twenty-first-century Britain. This journey was screened on the United Kingdom’s Channel 4 as a three-part documentary entitled All in the Best Possible Taste . Throughout his journey, Perry uses his observations and interactions with thos…

  • Co-producing cyber protest

    Philippe Odou, Graham H Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 72

This article examines how mesomobilization deploys on the web to foster online resistance. We focus on a particular cyber protest targeting a governmental campaign against illegal downloading and show how webzines, as meso-level actors, managed to turn their readers’ comments into appealing frames around cultural legitimacy, Internet freedom and morality. In this instance, web users initiated the diagnostic framing and provided webzines with moti…

  • All mod cons

    Graham H Roberts•ARTICLE•Canadian-American Slavic Studies•2017

In our paper we propose a typology of the different ways in which the theme of consumption and the consumer society is treated in contemporary Russian literature. Some writers, of whom Oksana Robski is perhaps the best known, view consumption as something entirely positive, as a way for an individual (and especially a woman) to affirm their social identity. Others, such as Sergei Minaev and Viktor Pelevin, directly attack consumerism for the mann…

  • Leader of the Gang

    Graham H Roberts•ARTICLE•Fashion Theory•2017•References: 4

Of all the fashion designers to have emerged in Russia in recent years, few are more remarkable than Gosha Rubchinskiy. He first made his name as a fashion photographer and designer of street wear, before being signed up by Adrian Joffe at Comme des Garçons in 2012. One of the most interesting aspects of Rubchinskiy’s work is his video output. Rubchinskiy’s unique brand of moving image completely “transfigures” the fashion film, raising important…

  • Angels with Dirty Faces

    Open Access•Graham H Roberts, Graham Roberts•ARTICLE•Journal of Extreme Anthropology•2017•Cited by: 1

In many ways, twenty-first century Russia is the land par excellence of extreme masculinity. President Putin himself regularly indulges in spectacular performances of extreme masculinity, whether it be pledging to 'bump off' Chechen terrorists in their 'shithouses', swimming in ice-cold Siberian lakes, or posing in the pilot's seat of a supersonic strategic bomber. Men's fashion and fashion imagery is one of the rare areas of Russian culture wher…

  • Consumer Culture, Branding and Identity in the New Russia

    Graham H Roberts, Graham H J Roberts•BOOK•Consumer Culture, Branding and…•2016

As shopping has been transformed from a chore into a major source of hedonistic pleasure, a specifically Russian consumer culture has begun to emerge that is unlike any other. This book examines the many different facets of consumption in today’s Russia, including retailing, advertising and social networking. Throughout, emphasis is placed on the inherently visual - not to say spectacular - nature both of consumption generally, and of Russian con…

  • On the Trans-Siberian with Sylvester Stallone

    Open Access•Graham H Roberts•ARTICLE•Quaestio Rossica•2014

In our short paper we look at how certain brands in post-socialist Russia appeal to consumers’ patriotism in order to build brand identity. In order to ensure thematic coherence, we restrict our discussion to the alcohol sector. In the first part, we analyse the packaging of certain vodka and brandy brands. Our focus then shifts to beer and specifically the Facebook page of AB-InBev’s ‘Siberian Crown’ brand (entitled ‘The Map of Russian Pride’). …

  • Message on a bottle

    Graham H Roberts•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2014•Cited by: 8•References: 36

This paper employs a visual research method to examine how companies in post-socialist Russia use packaging to construct their brand identity. We analyse the packaging of two product categories in particular, namely chocolate and vodka, and show how packaging is exploited to generate certain types of myths, both about the brand itself and – crucially – about Russia and Russianness. As we show, a large number of brands in Russia build their identi…
