  • "Assessing Admiration for Women Who Do "Men's Work

    Open Access•I Pike, Rachael S Pierotti et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2024•References: 40

Drawing on interviews and focus groups from Conakry, the capital city of the Republic of Guinea in West Africa, this article examines how people talk about women working in male-dominated skilled trades alongside women's accounts of their work experiences in those sectors. We find that the idea of women doing gender atypical work, whom we call "crossovers," evokes widespread admiration. They are unanimously described as brave and virtuous, contra…

  • More than Measurement Error: Discrepant Reporting of Contraceptive Use and the Role of Wives’ and Husbands’ Educational Attainment

    Open Access•Elyse A Jennings, Rachael S Pierotti•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2023•References: 75

This paper describes discrepancies in spouses’ reports of the use of female‐controlled, nonvisible contraceptive methods using data from rural Nepal that were collected monthly from both spouses of 822 couples between 2008 and 2016. We find that spouses in about half of couples provided discrepant reports during the period of observation, and these discrepancies occurred in 14 percent of the months of observation. We then investigate these discre…

  • Resilience, Vulnerability, and Social Isolation: Barriers to Poverty Reduction in War

    Open Access•Milli Lake, Rachael S Pierotti et al.•ARTICLE•International Studies Quarterly•2023•References: 4

The majority of the world’s ultra-poor live in conflict-affected environments. Poverty reduction efforts are increasingly attempting to target the most vulnerable inhabitants of these settings. Few studies have so far examined their impacts. Against the backdrop of one of the largest humanitarian crises in recent years, survey data from the Central African Republic demonstrates that a year after the conclusion of a large social safety net program…

  • Reason-giving for resistance: Obfuscation, Justification and Earmarking in Resisting Informal Financial Assistance

    Open Access•Kristen Mcneill, Rachael S Pierotti•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 51

Monetary assistance is a common request from social ties and can be both an economic lifeline and a financial burden. This study examines the relational work at the heart of such exchanges, examining when and how attempts at mobilizing informal financial assistance are resisted. Using qualitative data from West African factory workers, we demonstrate that individuals who wish to resist the provision of assistance without causing relational damage…

  • Women farm what they can manage: How time constraints affect the quantity and quality of labor for married women’s agricultural production in southwestern Nigeria

    Open Access•Rachael S Pierotti, Sophia Friedson-Ridenour et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2022•Cited by: 9•References: 13

Across sub-Saharan Africa smallholder farmers depend heavily on manual labor supplied by their households, families, and communities. Gender differences in the ability of farm managers to acquire needed labor has been linked with women's disadvantage in agricultural productivity. This in-depth qualitative research in southwestern Nigeria builds on studies that document gender gaps by examining how men and women make sense of the allocation of lab…

Open Access•Julia Vaillant, Estelle Koussoubé et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2020

METHODS: A two-armed, matched-pair, cluster randomised controlled trial was conducted between 2016 and 2018 in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. …

  • Walking the Line: Brokering Humanitarian Identities in Conflict Research

Chloé Lewis, Alfred Banga et al.•ARTICLE•Civil Wars•2019•Cited by: 9•References: 13

Increasingly, academic research in conflict-affected contexts relies on support from humanitarian organizations. Humanitarian organizations constitute sites of study in and of themselves; they partner with academics to roll out surveys or randomized program interventions; and they frequently facilitate security, logistics and transportation for independent researchers. We use a research partnership between IRC, the World Bank, and academic resear…

  • Equality on His Terms: Doing and Undoing Gender through Men’s Discussion Groups

    Open Access•Rachael S Pierotti, Milli Lake et al.•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•2018•Cited by: 11•References: 21

Efforts to promote gender equality often encourage changes to interpersonal interactions as a way of undermining gender hierarchy. Such programs are premised on the idea that the gender system can be “undone” when individuals behave in ways that challenge prevailing gender norms. However, scholars know little about whether and under what conditions real changes to the gender system can result from changed behaviors. We use the context of a gender…

    Elyse A Jennings, Rachael S Pierotti•ARTICLE•Population Studies•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 56

As couples across the globe increasingly exercise conscious control over their reproduction, both spouses' family-size preferences have the opportunity to influence their fertility. Using couple-level measures of rural Nepalese spouses' family-size preferences and more than a decade of monthly panel data collected subsequently on fertility outcomes, we investigate how both spouses' preferences influence progression to a third birth in a country w…

This study extends existing world society research on ideational diffusion by going beyond examinations of national policy change to investigate the spread of ideas among nonelite individuals. Specifically, I test whether recent trends in women's attitudes about intimate partner violence are converging toward global cultural scripts. Results suggest that global norms regarding violence against women are reaching citizens worldwide, including in s…
