The 46th Reconnaissance Squadron: Arctic Exploration and Questions of Sovereignty in the Early Cold War
In the early Cold War, the Arctic emerged as a key region in American military planning. In 1946, the newly formed US Strategic Air Command deployed the 46th Reconnaissance Squadron to Alaska to improve navigational and cold weather flying capabilities. Major projects assigned to the squadron included the search for undiscovered land masses in the polar region, should any exist, and the establishment of an air route between Ladd Airfield, Alaska …

De Subtilitate Tactus
The sensations aroused in the touch organ are of two sorts: for we perceive a certain pressure or traction heat or cold; but in both cases the sensation seems to depend on some sort of pressure. If two contiguous and mobile parts are touched simultaneously, these parts are more clearly discriminated and seem farther apart than if one part is touched in two places simultaneously. If two parts of the skin are touched simultaneously we can discrimin…
A Narrative of Events, since the First of August, 1834
This new edition of an important slave narrative is especially valuable because of the fine introduction by Diana Paton, which places the Williams pamphlet and story within the broader tradition of slave narratives of the Americas. The pamphlet is accompanied by the evidentiary minutes of an inquiry held in Jamaica following the publication of this and other relevant documents; these minutes help illuminate the context and the events that William…

The fate of Herbart's mathematical psychology
The fate of Herbart's mathematical psychology
In the 30 years following its fullest presentation in 1824, the mathematical psychology of J. F. Herbart (1776-1841) was widely taught and often favorably discussed by scholars such as M. W. Drobisch. However, Herbart's theory received considerable criticism after the introduction of experimentation into psychology by Fechner and Wundt; Ebbinghaus was more friendly toward it. In the period from about 1885 to 1910, with the focus on unconscious pr…
Conflicts and missed signals in psychoanalysis, behaviorism, and Gestalt psychology
At the turn of the 20th century, European psychologists found themselves in conflict situations with respect to the role that private mental states should play in a scientific psychology. Out of this conflict arose 3 of the best-known schools of the 20th century: psychoanalysis, behaviorism, and Gestalt psychology. Each of these schools is discussed with respect to two characteristics. First, the authors discuss the attitude of each school on the…

The Role of Category Size in Continuous Recall from Semantic Memory
The time to recognize a word as an exemplar of a category has been found to be little influenced by the size of the category. In contrast, three recall studies have indicated that the rate of continuous recall of exemplars of a category is a function of the category's size. However, these recall studies used large categories which dealt with topics different from the small categories, confounding size effects with differences in stimulus meaning.…

The Measurement of Speed of Problem Solving and Its Relation to Children's Age and Ability
S ummary . The times children take to reach correct solutions to seven easy Block Design items from the try‐out version of the British Intelligence Scale were analysed in terms of two regression models. The times were obtained from 395 children aged between 10 and 13 years, each of whom had a score of four or more on the full 16‐item test. The simpler of the two models was found to be the most satisfactory, the model specifying that the time to c…

Vocalization, Primary Memory and Secondary Memory
Three experiments are reported, all directed to the question of whether vocalization at presentation affects primary memory (PM) rather than secondary memory (SM). In Expt. I vocalization was found to affect the PM component of free recall but not the SM component. Imagery value on the other hand affected SM but not PM. In Expt. II vocalization was found to hinder the retention of stories in comparison with silent reading. The effects of structur…

Visual and Auditory Presentation, Presentation Rate, and Short‐term Memory in Children
Lists of six digits were presented either auditorially or visually at rates of 1, 2 or 3 digits/sec to groups of 7‐, 8‐, 9‐ and 10‐year‐old girls. Immediate recall improved with age under all conditions, but the recall of visually presented slow lists improved with age at a steeper rate than did the recall of visually presented fast lists or of auditorially presented lists. The results are related to the findings of previous studies on STM as a f…
The Reorganisation of Nigeria's Administration
The period of military rule in Nigeria has brought fundamental changes in the country's administrative system, which foreshadow further significant ones to come. This is a useful point at which to summarise the changes so far made and consider what major problems remain.Nigeria achieved independence from colonial rule in i960 with a federal system of government in which the administrative system was largely modelled on that of Britain. The Federa…
