  • Understanding Frédéric Flachéron’s Paper Negative Process through Experimentation and Specular Reflection FTIR Analysis

Open Access•Elena Bulat, Laura Panadero et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2023•References: 2

Cultural heritage objects present a special set of challenges for chemical analysis. Often micro-sampling or even contacting the object is deemed an unacceptable risk to the object. This study examined if specular reflection FTIR, a non-sampling and non-contact analytical technique, can provide insight into chemical composition of the layered coatings on Frédéric Flachéron’s paper negatives (1848–1852) in the Harrison D. Horblit Collection of Ear…

  • When your body is a battlefield

    Erin L Murphy, Erin Murphy•ARTICLE•The Seventeenth Century•2023•References: 8

The title of Lucy Hutchinson’s Genesis poem, Order and Disorder, describes her depictions of reproduction, as she charts both the horrors and the promise of the protoevangelium. The relationship between order and disorder, however, also serves as an apt description of her experiences of war. This essay begins to explore the way that Hutchinson’s work depicts reproduction and war as intertwined fields of struggle and possibility. Focused primarily…

  • Predicted growth in plastic waste exceeds efforts to mitigate plastic pollution

Open Access•Stephanie B Borrelle, Jeremy Ringma et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2020

A mess of plastic It is not clear what strategies will be most effective in mitigating harm from the global problem of plastic pollution. Borrelle et al. and Lau et al. discuss possible solutions and their impacts. Both groups found that substantial reductions in plastic-waste generation can be made in the coming decades with immediate, concerted, and vigorous action, but even in the best case scenario, huge quantities of plastic will still accum…

  • Giving Sex

    Open Access•Georgiann Davis, Jodie M Dewey et al.•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•2016•Cited by: 43•References: 29

Although medical providers rely on similar tools to 'treat' intersex and trans individuals, their enactment of medicalization practices varies. To deconstruct these complexities, we employ a comparative analysis of providers who specialize in intersex and trans medicine. While both sets of providers tend to hold essentialist ideologies about sex, gender, and sexuality, we argue they medicalize intersex and trans embodiments in different ways. Pro…

  • In a Few Generations

    Open Access•Erin L Murphy•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 18

After the Spanish-American War of 1898, anti-imperialists and imperialists hotly debated whether to keep the Philippines as a colony. The 'generation' schema, which communicated racialized views of Filipinos/as and their ability to self-govern once they had been educated by white Americans, developed in these debates. For both imperialists and anti-imperialists, the 'generation' schema was rooted in racialized neo-Lamarckian notions of how the en…

  • Women's Anti-Imperialism, 'The White Man's Burden,' and the Philippine-American War

    Open Access•Erin L Murphy•ARTICLE•Japan focus•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 10

At the Chicago Liberty Meeting in April 1899, organized to protest U.S. imperialist advances in the Philippines, Jane Addams was the only woman of eight plenary speakers. There she stated, "To 'protect the weak' has always been the excuse of the ruler and tax-gatherer, the chief, the king, the baron; and now, at last, of 'the white man'" (Addams 1899). A few months earlier, in late 1898, the United States purchased the Philippines from Spain in t…

  • "Prelude to Imperialism"1

    Open Access•Erin L Murphy•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Sociology•2005•Cited by: 9•References: 12

The debates around Chinese exclusion were part of a racial reimagining of the United States after the Civil War. These debates show how the Exclusion Acts were the "prelude to imperialism" overseas. By employing competing racisms toward Chinese migrants, disparate groups of whites created contradictory stereotypes of the Chinese, such as the "coolie" and "celestial." Focusing on working-class whites' messy and violent racism toward the Chinese ha…
