The French Translation of the Theórica: From Political Arithmetic to Political Economy
Histories of Trade as Histories of Civilisation
The Politics of Commercial Treaties in the Eighteenth Century
This book is the first study that analyses bilateral commercial treaties as instruments of peace and trade comparatively and over time. The work focuses on commercial treaties as an index of the challenges of eighteenth-century European politics, shaping a new understanding of these challenges and of how they were confronted at the time in theory and diplomatic practice. From the middle of the seventeenth century to the time of the Napoleonic war…
Translation, Reception and Enlightened Reform: The Case of Forbonnais in Eighteenth-Century Political Economy
In this Introduction I explore the process of emulation by focusing on two distinct but related topics: the role played by Véron de Forbonnais (1722–1800) in the debate regarding the European balance of power following the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht, and the appropriation and adaptation of Forbonnais’s reformist project in eighteenth-century Europe
The Wealth and Freedom of the North: Scandinavian Political Cultures and Economic Ideas in the Eighteenth Century
The article analyses the political, cultural and social changes that affected the North in the ‘Age of Revolution’; Finnish State-Building around 1900 is investigated through the figure of Chydenius, a Finland precursor of Adam Smith ; analysing the Finnish case, the article offers a new inside on the problem of Patriotism, and the active reception of Physiocracy in Smaller States
Beyond the Treaty of Utrecht: Véron de Forbonnais's French Translation of theBritish Merchant(1753)
This study focuses on the cultural and political context from which stemmed the French translation of the British Merchant. The paratextual and macrostructural interventions that characterised Le négotiant anglois clearly demonstrate that the translator, Véron de Forbonnais, used his work to set out his own epistemological method and his way of looking at inter-state relations. With the book, Forbonnais had distanced himself from Gournay by rejec…
