The Uncommonness of Urban Commons in Central and Eastern European Countries
This paper looks at the uncommonness of open space Urban Commons, i.e., squares, playgrounds, plazas, etc., in Central and Eastern European Countries. Such spaces are complex urban commons in terms of governance and are often contested in the frame of urbanisation and market-led processes of city-making, as well as for what they represent as constructs of values and identity. The four open space Urban Commons examples (respectively in Tirana, Pod…
Social Urban Identity Formation and Local Government
The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the issue of whether city governments could or should be engaged in (social) urban identity formation. From a functional angle, social urban identity formation can help to gain loyalty and pro-social and environmental behaviour. Earlier and current research on urban identity and urban development in three quite different cities, Rotterdam, Szczecin, and Tirana, informs our reflection. The city cases are …
Learning from overtourism; new tourism policy for the city of Rotterdam
Rotterdam’s tourism grows rapidly but is still modest compared to cities like Amsterdam and Brussels. Until 2018, Rotterdam’s municipal tourism actions were economically oriented and focused attention on marketing, hotels, congresses, and events. Local authorities became aware of potential negative impacts of tourism, associated with overtourism, and decided that a new tourism policy was needed. The municipality presented early 2020 its new touri…

Little is known about place attachment in the Balkans. This study aims to start filling this gap. After a contextualization of place attachment studies in the Balkans and its relevance for research and practice, a brief review of theory is offered. Then the methodology of the empirical part of the study is clarified. Over 300 citizens living in seven different neighborhoods of Tirana have been interviewed on place attachment issues such as sense …
Hybrid Urban Identity—The Case of Rotterdam
This essay aims to investigate the development of Rotterdam’s urban identity. It is a case study, with a theoretical reflection on the concept of urban identity. Rotterdam is a post-industrial port city in a process of physical, social and economic transformations. A narrative is developed on urban identity along the frame of a research on Rotterdam’s identity 15 years ago that identified aspects of what was “typical Rotterdam”. It is clarified t…
Metaphor and urban studies-a crossover, theory and a case study of SS Rotterdam
Metaphors are used in various ways; at the surface for framing a message (systems of language) and below the surface metaphors are related to the ways we think and act. In this paper we will explore, below the surface, the relationship between metaphors and urban studies. From an analysis of metaphors used in urban studies, it will be concluded that, so to speak, every new phenomenon gets a new metaphor around which theoretical notions are develo…
Local government training capacity in Romania
