Societal stereotypes in representations of disability on postage stamps
This paper examines the representations of disability on an overlooked cultural medium such as postage stamps out of a collected corpus of 250 stamps that were analyzed and taxonomized in thematic categories. Thematic analysis was the first method employed and the first-level coding led to the formation of seven thematic categories that were found to represent societal stereotypes around disability: (1) disabled people are wheelchair bound; (2) d…

Stamped allegories of disability
This study examines the representations of the disabled body by unpicking the messages transferred through the artistic illustrations of disability found in 250 postage stamps. The theoretical framework employed derives from cultural, critical and feminist disability studies, while the tripartite model of disability served as a critical framework to the analysis of the representations of the disabled body. The first-level coding led in the classi…
Rhetoric and Religion in Ancient Greece and Rome
It is perhaps a truism to note that ancient religion and rhetoric were closely intertwined in Greek and Roman antiquity. Religion is embedded in socio-political, legal and cultural institutions and structures, while also being influenced, or even determined, by them. Rhetoric is used to address the divine, to invoke the gods, to talk about the sacred, to express piety and to articulate, refer to, recite or explain the meaning of hymns, oaths, pra…

A ‘Legend’ in Crisis
From the early 1930s to the early 1960s many scholars, whether liberalminded or socialist ideologues, Marxist or scientific positivists, classical scholars or political theorists and historians, have shown a widespread consensus in discrediting and assailing the man and political philosopher Plato. Such an extensive assault led the ‘Platonic Legend’ to an unprecedented crisis. Philosophically, it was a reaction to the undisguised Platonolatry com…
