Maps as a Historical Source of the Southern Yunnan Borderland
The study aims to analyze the representations of the borderland region in the southwestern and southern parts of Yunnan province reflected on the Chinese maps produced from early Ming (1368–1644) until late Qing (1644–1911) periods in order to trace the perception of this wide terrain inhabited by the non-Han ethnic groups by the Chinese state. Initial point of this research are two Qing period hand-written albums on Yunnan province (No. Xyl. F-25, Xyl. F-26) from the holdings of the Academic Library of Saint-Petersburg State University. This paper aims to evaluate textual descriptions of Guizhou ethnic groups found in the Qing dynasty Miao albums as a source for the study of history of large ethnic groups such as Miao, Yizu and Gelao.
