  • Marking focus in Chatino

    Troi Carleton, Rachelle Waksler•ARTICLE•WORD•2002•References: 6

This paper presents and analyzes new data from the officially endangered language Chatino. We investigate the behavior of a Chatino preposition, jį?į which is sometimes found preceding direct objects. Its patterning, with respect to when it will and when it will not precede a direct object, has so far eluded characterization. Using both natural discourse and elicited data, we examine and reject hypotheses of jį?į's occurrence based on various pro…

L'A. presente les nouvelles constructions avec all en anglais americain utilisees par les adolescents et les jeunes adultes de San Francisco. Rachelle Waksler•ARTICLE•WORD•2001•Cited by: 11•References: 6

The interaction between intonational patterns and speaker gender has long been noted in the language and gender literature (e.g., Brend 1972, Lakoff 1975, McConnell-Ginet 1983, Ohara 1992). It has also been hypothesized (Moonwomon 1985, Queen 1997) that intonation may be a locus of difference between lesbian and heterosexual women's speech. This paper investigates the question of whether there is an interaction between pitch range and sexual orie…

  • Morphology and meaning in the English mental lexicon.

    William Marslen-Wilson, William D Marslen‐Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Review•1994

The authors investigated the lexical entry for morphologically complex words in English. Six experiments, using a cross-modal repetition priming task, asked whether the lexical entry for derivationally suffixed and prefixed words is morphologically structured and how this relates to the semantic and phonological transparency of the surface relationship between stem and affix. There was clear evidence for morphological decomposition of semanticall…
