Social expenditure composition and inequality
This paper studies the relationship between inequality and public social spending for an overall sample of 28 OECD countries spanning 1997 to 2017. We add to the literature by dissecting social expenditure according to nine programs and allowing for the existence of a non-linear relation in the context of a dynamic panel threshold model. The analysis reveals a positive contribution of old-age pensions to the Gini index of disposable income distri…
The Financialization of Health and Education and Inequality in Twenty-first Century Brazil
Brazil is often cited for its high levels of inequality. Despite some success in reducing this inequality during the Partido dos Trabalhadores (Workers' Party-PT) period, the rise of Jair Bolsonaro as Brazil's president threatened to reverse this trend as he actively sought to promote policies that would lead to greater financialization of the Brazilian economy. In recent years, several studies have shown that the financialization of the economy …
The political economy of productivity growth
This paper empirically evaluates the importance of institutions and political stability for productivity growth. We explore this relation in a novel way by evaluating the impact of political and institutional variables on the structural change and within-sector components of labor productivity growth. Our results do not provide robust evidence that democracy/autocracy affects productivity growth, either through structural change or within-sector …
Bubbles in Exchange Rates and Monetary Policy
We evaluate the macroeconomic performance of different monetary policy rules when there are bubbles in the exchange rate. We do this in the context of a non‐linear rational expectations model. The exchange rate is allowed to deviate from its fundamental value and the persistence of the deviation is modeled as a Markov switching process. Our results suggest that reacting to exchange rate movements does not significantly improve welfare. However, t…
