Getting There and Staying There
In the following rejoinder, we respond to Betz, Phillips, Flores, and colleagues’ reactions to Fouad et al.’s major contribution (2023 [this issue]) on women’s career development. Particularly, we respond to comments highlighting the importance of studying individual differences along intersectional lines in explaining vocational behavior. We contend that this level of nuance in understanding people’s career decisions is necessary in order to bui…
Why Aren’t We There Yet? The Status of Research in Women’s Career Development
The career development of women has been a longstanding topic of inquiry in vocational psychology. Two previous major reviews in this area consistently identified that women tend to experience more career barriers than men. This major contribution sought to extend this work by providing a third systematic review of the literature on women’s career development. We focused our review explicitly on the experiences of women rather than women compared…

Drawing on social cognitive career theory, this study examined the influence of the family on college students’ academic and overall life satisfaction. The participants were 312 college students at a south Brazilian university who completed measures of family influence, along with measu…

Three Strands, One Braid
This paper contains the text of the Leona Tyler Award address given by the author in San Francisco in August 2018. The author reviews her career, tracing the three strands that have influenced her work: Cultural context, counseling psychology, and the study of work. These three strands are presented individually, then brought together in the metaphor of a braid to symbolize the way in which the three strands intertwine throughout her career. The …

SCCT and Underrepresented Populations in STEM Fields
The authors review research that has used social cognitive career theory as a frame to investigate factors that may explain science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) choices and work decisions for women and racial–ethnic minorities, as well as barriers to their entry to STEM careers. The research is reviewed by age-groups. Most of this research has focused on factors associated with early choices (e.g., in high school and younger),…
Empirical influence of the multicultural guidelines
Our findings suggest that most of the articles that cited the Guidelines used the citation as a way to document that culture is important to consider. In some cases, other professions cited the Guidelines to argue that their discipline should also attend to culture. However, very few articles focused on framing an investigation around a specific guideline. (PsycINFO Database Record

Asian American Educational Goals
Educational success among Asian American students has often been misunderstood as an occupational development separate from any experience of racism. However, several theorists have suggested that racial barriers in occupational mobility correlate with educational pursuits. Therefore, this research aims to examine the direct effect of perceived occupational racial barriers on educational pursuits and cultural factors as potential coping resources…

Individuals make choices in, and adjust to, a world of work that is often a moving target. Because work is so central to human functioning, and transitions in and out of work can have major mental health repercussions, the authors argue that applied psychologists in health services need to understand those transitions. This article focuses on the different types of transition throughout a person's working life and the resources needed at differen…

Women psychologists in academe
H istorically, academe has been an inhospitable place for women—indeed, one of the reasons psychologists are represented in so many other diverse employment settings is because women with psychology doctorates found the halls of academe closed to them (Russo & O'Connell, 1980). Today, women are more active participants in the academy, and they can join together with the institutions in which they work to help women faculty develop and contribute …
