  • No Space for Newts and Bats

Andrew Linzey, Clair Linzey•ARTICLE•Journal of Animal Ethics•2026

Political utterances are seldom worth philosophical engagement. Most are exercises in sloganeering and intended only for popular sound-bite consumption. But some are serious indications of an underlying political philosophy (or lack of one) and so are worthy of attention. Such is the case by the speech by Rachel Reeves, the UK's chancellor of the exchequer. She says, “We are reducing the environmental requirements placed on developers . . . so th…

  • The Basis for an Amicus Brief for ‘Happy’ the Captive Elephant

    Andrew Linzey, Clair Linzey•ARTICLE•Modern Believing•2023

Based on an Amicus Brief (a legal document submitted to the court relating to a case brought by the Nonhuman Rights Project on behalf of Happy the Elephant), this paper holds that the treatment of Happy the captive elephant is contrary to Christian ethics and the teaching of the Anglican/Episcopal Church. Seven considerations are enumerated concluding that since God has the right to have creatures treated with respect, denying Happy her natural b…

  • Bringing Animal Ethics Into Many Disciplines

Clair Linzey, Andrew Linzey•ARTICLE•Journal of Animal Ethics•2022

We are often asked by students how to make the greatest impact for animals with their careers. They are frequently considering paths such as becoming animal lawyers or activists. This is in part due to the recent large growth in animal law as an academic discipline (Townsend, 2013) and the gaining popularity of activism, such as Extinction Rebellion. While peaceful activism may have its place, and animal law is the right path for those who love th…

  • Not So Happy Hens

Andrew Linzey, Clair Linzey•ARTICLE•Journal of Animal Ethics•2022

An international company has been promoting itself as producing happy eggs. The commercials offer pictures of hens living in idyllic conditions—free to roam in wide grass lands replete with sunshine and trees in which to shelter. Intrigued by these commercials, one of us wrote to the company concerned and inquired whether the millions of male chicks were similarly cared for. The response was that male chicks (surplus to requirements) were killed …

  • Why Animal Suffering Matters

    Andrew Linzey•BOOK•Why animal suffering matters•2013•Cited by: 1

How we treat animals arouses strong emotions. Many people are repulsed by photographs of cruelty to animals and respond passionately to how we make animals suffer for food, commerce, and sport. But is this, as some argue, a purely emotional issue? Are there really no rational grounds for opposing our current treatment of animals? This book argues that when analyzed impartially the rational case for extending moral solicitude to all sentient being…
